Dusty Hill was also a hell of a bass player. Got his start in Jack Ruby's club in Dallas when he was like 14.

Billy Gibbons is a HUGE Depeche Mode fan. I just thought I'd pass that along.

Ron Popeil, guy who made infomercials before anybody had even heard of such a thing. Pocket Fisherman & Showtime Rotisserie were a couple of his most well known.

https://nypost.com/2021/07/28/ron-popei ... ead-at-86/

Something about that song reminds me of the B52's.
I thought the exact same thing. Gotta be intentional, but I don’t know if he’s spoofing a specific B52's song as I don’t know their catalog that well.
it’s intentional. And not a specific song.

I’m enough of a nerd to know that Weird Al usually did at least one song an album that was a pastiche of a band’s style, but not a specific song. His most successful one was probably the Devo pastiche “Dare To Be Stupid.”
Thanks. That makes sense. I bought “In 3-D” shortly after it came out, in 1984 or so, and I mostly remember the direct song parodies like Eat it (Michael Jackson) or King of Suede (The Police). But of course, every time I hear Ron Popeil mentioned, I immediately think “Help me! Mr. Popeeeeeil!”

Wasn't Jack Ruby your uncle or something?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

His obituary said that he went thru a homeless stretch in the 90s and then became a minister.

Hello,

I think he had a stroke playing catch while still in the big leagues.

I can't recall the exact circumstances of his stroke, but it was right in the middle of the 1980 season and he was, as usual, one of the dominant pitchers in the game at the time. He was also physically huge at a time when pro ballplayers weren't that much bigger than the average person.

Yeah I remember the stroke. The greatest to ever wear an Astros uniform.

Those Astros had him and Nolan Ryan in the same rotation. That'd be so fucking imposing in the post-season.

Responding to his critics about his shitty catching skills, Gary Sanchez has caught COVID. (I'm guessing I'm the 9 millionth person to have made this kind of joke already.)
