When we ride in my wife's car, she only listens to the radio, in my car, we listen to whatever I have on my iPod. Ridding in her car reinforces my disdain for commercial radio, it's just crap.

Oddly, that might be what I miss most about driving—that my iPod got to be in charge.

Thinking about my love for radio, I'd say a lot of it is nostalgia driven, remembering that time as a kid, for example, when i discovered Radio Luxembourg on longwave and it was like finding a portal into another dimension. There's a lot of reasons to dislike Van Morrison, of course, but one of the things i love is the devotion to radio that is a recurring theme of his music, the magic and power it retains for him. Don't mean that to sound pretentious, it's more a source of comfort really than anything else.

That shit has been standard since rock n roll's birth. As the promoters say, we can't guarantee you a hit record, but we can guarantee that you won't have a hit record (if you don't pay up).

I'm pretty ambivalent about payola. When there's so much music being released, there has to be a system for funneling or filtering what gets moved to the front of the queue. Money is how it works. The only way around it, I think, is narrower and narrower genre-based radio, where the amount of new music to sift thru becomes manageable for humans.

Don't cook chicken in NyQuil

Canadian content story: Back in the old days, NyQuil used to have a decent alcohol content. As the story goes, Canada's PM in the 80s, Brian Mulroney, was an ex-drunk who guzzled NyQuil to get his fix while officially dry.

I can't imagine even being able to chew and swallow a piece of chicken marinated and cooked in NyQuil. :yuck:
