Re: Oh Canada!
Went for a hike in the Niagara Gorge this morning at Lewiston, New York, about a 25 minute drive away. Took a few casts for lake trout (no luck but saw a lot of jumpers). Great view though. On the left in the photo (which faces roughly south) is the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge to Queenston, Ontario. In normal times it is choked with trucks laden with (I've always assumed) hockey pucks. The bridge is 370 feet above the river. Just beyond the bridge in the photo is the Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Power Station in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Re: Oh Canada!
In this photo, facing roughly northward, the village of Queenston, Ontario, is just visible to the right of the cliffs. Somewhere in this photo, American forces scaled the cliffs in 1812 during the Battle of Queenston Heights (the first major battle in the War of 1812) in an abortive attempt to take some land on the other side of the Niagara River. But we botched it (dammit!).

Thanks! It was a beautiful day for a hike, low 50s and sunny. Maybe the last one for a while as the forecast is looking cold and wet for the next couple weeks.

You need to build up a harangue about how Lake Champlain should really be considered a Great Lake.revbob wrote: ↑29 Nov 2020, 7:21pmYes Champlain right in BurlingtonKimmelweck wrote: ↑29 Nov 2020, 7:07pmLooks nice. "By declaring Lake Champlain to be a Great Lake, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont saw an opportunity to make his land-locked state eligible to host a Sea Grant office. The minor edit to the appropriations bill escaped notice and the bill passed on a voice vote. President Bill Clinton signed it on March 7, 1998.
An Ohio representative scoffed, “If Lake Champlain ends up as a Great Lake, I propose we rename it ‘Lake Plain Sham’.” The Green Bay Press in Wisconsin labelled Senator Leahy the Fourth Stooge for adding a sixth Great Lake."
edit: Since Lake Champlain extends into Quebec, this is all perfectly on-topic for this thread.

Re: Oh Canada!
Yeah I think it's great lake status was withdrawn but it still enjoys some benefits of that status if Im not mistaken.
