Bill Buckner.

They say he died of a broken heart, crushed under foot of the Boston faithful.

One of the great false myths of the Red Sox is that the fans booed him the next season and thereafter. Never happened (except for the occasional drunk frat boy type). But it's a better narrative to have him be the goat.

I've heard this from plenty who were too old to be frat boys.

I always saw him as really, a great player. What a hitter he was in his day, a tough out.

Anyone who sees him as the goat of that game didn't watch it, is ignoring everything else that happened in that half inning (fuck you, Calvin Schiraldi, you toad), and/or happily inhales Dan Shaughnessy word farts. But most people in the park in '87 and '88 didn't change their view of him. Just ain't true.

I saw bullshit rage from the same kind of Massholes who were too young to actually remember 86 but loved singing Tessie at full volume.

I never really saw that here. People I know who like baseball always felt sorry for him and lay blame at the Rich Gedman past ball and John McNamara's poor management skills.

The blame goes to Schiraldi, for not being able to close it out despite getting to two strikes on a couple guys; McNamara for not putting Stapleton in for Buckner in the bottom half, as was normal; Stanley for bouncing that pitch; and Gedman for not blocking it. If Billy gets blame, he's fifth in line. It never should have gotten to the point where his error could have happened.

You were probably with baseball fans, not fans of acting really hard about shit that happened before their time because they saw Denis Leary’s standup.

It's interesting, five years ago I had never heard of Lewy-body Dementia and now it keeps popping up. It killed my mother-in-law in late 2017. Robin Williams was suffering mental decline from it when he killed himself. My folk's old friend and neighbor is dying of it right now. Now Billy Buck is dead from this disease. I am convinced we are all poisoning ourselves.
