Well that was unexpected.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Tommy Terrific Seaver dead at 75, from dementia/covid.

I remember hearing about the dementia. A great pitcher in his day, fucking dominant.

I've always loved this story about Seaver:

"In 1967, on his way to being the first Mets player to win Rookie of the Year, Seaver was chosen for the All-Star Game. At just 23 years old, the timid Seaver approached Hank Aaron, seeking his autograph. Seaver introduced himself to the slugger. Aaron responded, 'Kid, I already know who you are and before your career is over, I guarantee everyone in this stadium will, too.' Years later, after his retirement, Hammerin’ Hank would call Seaver, 'The toughest pitcher I ever faced.'"

Hall of Famer manager Sparky Anderson once said, “My idea of managing is giving the ball to Tom Seaver and then sitting down and watching him work.”

And the Mets, always being the Mets, traded The Franchise to the Reds out of spite.

Yeah the Mets traded away some great talent. Nolan Ryan comes to mind.

It's astounding that one NY team represents excellence in baseball and one team assclownery. Both teams playing in the biggest market and cash to burn, yet the historical level of competence is pretty wide.

Yeah, so is the way of NY sports the past 50 years. Although both the Rangers and Islanders have had their time in the sun.

Not really. Knicks last made the finals like 20 years ago. I don't think the Nets ever have.

The Knicks have been awful for a long time but did have a time where they mattered.
