I know I've gotten tep to read it, but have you ever read Dan Epstein's Big Hair and Plastic Grass? One of my favourite baseball books. It makes a case for the 70s being the best goddamned decade for baseball—chaotic, loaded with mind-altering drugs instead of body-altering ones, and seriously fun.

I have to prep like mad, basically memorize what Im going to say.

I got pulled into a major presentation recently it was horrible. Im fine sitting around a table but once I need to stand up in front of people my brain turns to mush.

My lecture notes are really detailed to keep me on track. Whenever I ad lib, within 5 minutes I'm three tangents removed and asking, “Where was I going?” My friend's lecture notes are so spare, I'd be doomed and my class confused at how a lecture on 1950s suburbia took a detour into Gramsci, disco, Athens, GA, and My Lai. I'm Robin Williams without the coke.

My uncle knew Lieutenant Calley from his time in Viet Nam with the US Army and put me in touch with him when I was writing a thesis to wrap up my degree in 1997. I spoke to him twice by phone, each time for about an hour. He was remarkably forthcoming and contrite. I remember his only defence for his actions was that he was, "undertrained, young & stupid, and terrified". Aside from the obvious war criminal issues he was a nice guy. He told me to stop by his jewelry store in Atlanta if I was every in town.

When I did a Vietnam lecture, that's how I treated it. A war crime, yes, but these kids were not trained for an insane situation. You're there to protect civilians but also you know that some of those civilians would kill you if they got a chance, and you don't know how to distinguish one from the other. And even the ones you're there to protect don't trust you. And you know that your leaders have been lying to you and that this thing can't be won, so the best you can do is survive. And you've received poor training about Vietnamese culture (e.g., it was common for Vietnamese men to hold hands in groups, which American soldiers thought made them look gay). Just so much wrong about every aspect about that war.

For half a second, I thought you were announcing he'd died. Amazing to think that when he came up with Cleveland, nobody had heard of Monica Lewinsky and Netscape Navigator was the most advanced web browser on the market.

MLB Network is showing Game 3 of the 1997 ALCS (Baltimore and Cleveland). Cleveland won 2-1 in 12 on a steal of home (suicide squeeze that the batter missed and the catcher dropped. Mussina and Hershiser eached pitched gems. But I'm reminded of why I hated watching Mussina pitch—that fucking drinking bird move he used in his wind up. Clearly it worked for him, but it always seemed like a dumb affectation.
