I remember thinking the response to Maxwell highlighted how Jackie Robinson has been neutralized like Martin Luther King, turned into a symbol for those hostile to protest and criticism. They get held up as both evidence that the problem was solved decades ago—there's MLK Day plus baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day, you know!—and that they would be disappointed by how today's troublemakers aren't more grateful. They go from being dangerous communists and anti-American in their own day to being rhetorical tools of those who call today's protestors dangerous communists and anti-American.
