Hello,Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑06 Aug 2020, 9:29amYour caution is quite sensible. You're right that it's more work, but the risk otherwise makes it worthwhile. It's crazy how many schools—I'm thinking mainly of universities now—in the US who didn't consider the idea of not having in-person classes this fall and are now scrambling as faculty members rebel. Like, who could have foreseen that, duh. My school was having these conversations in April. Tho there haven't been discussions about how classes are going to be handled in the Winter term, I've already decided that if I can teach online, I'm going to (and I'd be surprised if they don't give us the option). The virus has made its way thru old age homes and is now finding viability in young people who, like most young people, think they're invincible and do stupid things, especially while drinking or puffing. Why the hell would I want to subject myself to being in the presence of hundreds and hundreds of them if I don't have to?WestwayKid wrote: ↑06 Aug 2020, 8:19amThey gave us 2 options: full time virtual or in person Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (with no school Wednesday so they can do a deep clean). We chose the virtual option. It means a lot more work on our end, but it just made more sense. We're not doomsday COVID types, but I do feel like schools very well might be the next hotbed. This initial phase will last 2 months and then the district will assess again.
The crazy thing is that it feels like every district in the county is doing it differently. We have a handful that are completely open for business. I think those districts (many are in very white, solidly Conservative areas) are going to face a rude awakening the first time someone comes down with COVID and they have to scramble to shut down.
The curious thing is that I'm not especially worried about becoming infected and dying. If it happens, there you go—I've gotten my share out of this life. But I don't need to possibly infect others and/or put them at risk by being present. And I really don't want to get infected and have my health compromised for the rest of my life—that's worse than dying for me.
We're still planning on face-to-face classes although we have 2 back-up plans in place. Class sizes have been really cut. I'm teaching in an A-B format (Tuesday, the A group comes to class while the B group watches live online; reverse the process for Thursday; when we do activities, A group does it on Tuesday while B group watches a recorded lecture, and so on). I'm really struggling on physiology labs. The labs provide such a great experience for the students - when they ask alumni about the class, they really enjoyed and remembered the labs. I've tried a lot of videos and other ideas but I can't really find something as impactful as the actual lab. We're a small school (~3,500 students) in a rural setting (no student ghetto or downtown college bar strip) so once students are here, they're fairly safe. We won't return after Thanksgiving and will have finals remotely.
That's the plan - as of now.

I just can't see this sort of format working. People like yourself will be exposed to all the students at one time or another.gkbill wrote: ↑06 Aug 2020, 3:52pm

My discipline has it easy in that we don't have labs. All I do is talk and show pictures por videos, or let other people talk. I really feel for the sciences and anybody else who does hands-on stuff. You're being put in a seriously tough spot—compromise your teaching or compromise your health. Fingers and toes crossed for you and your students that everybody can stay safe.gkbill wrote: ↑06 Aug 2020, 3:52pmHello,

Also I learned there is a ZZTop cover band called ZZ Topless. But it is nowhere near as interesting as it could be. No beards or anything.

How are any of those bands even still around?Other artists who performed Saturday include Molly Hatchet and the Guess Who ... Night Ranger, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, .38 Special, Quiet Riot, Smash Mouth and others are expected to perform in the coming days.

My capacity to be amazed at the longevity of these mediocre bands is bottomless. I've mentioned before being stunned that .38 Special is still around. Who is paying to see them in sufficient numbers that they keep on going? How is this happening?

When I lived in LA (Lower Alabama), I would see billboards for all sorts of casinos on the gulf coast in Mississippi hosting many of these types of bands.
