Our favorite pubs that we wish we could go to...

Sweet action for kids 'n' cretins. Marjoram and capers.

Our favorite pubs that we wish we could go to...

Post by BostonBeaneater »

I'm bored as hell.

JJ Foleys is my Boston go to. I don't live as close anymore so I only make once a month or so. There are no chairs on the old side of the bar where I like to go. You stand with your beer and watch local news after work and talk turkey with the folks at the bar. If you get there early, around 4, an old woman with a walker comes in, pumps the jukebox full of old soul songs, and gets herself a couple of glasses of red wine. They bring out a special chair for her.

I have zero faith that any of my favorite pubs are still going to exist when this is over so I don't want to dwell on it.

I fear the only thing that will exist after this will be franchise places.

Anchovies in the South End is a red sauce Italian joint disguised as a dive bar. They have a great chicken parm and a nice tap list.

I can see Tavolo in Dorchester from my kitchen window. They have great pizza and a nice wine list which my wife likes. We got to know a lot of folks from the neighborhood there. I love a horseshoe bar.

While living in Chelsea, NYC my favorite dive was the BillyMark, run by brother's Billy and Mark. This bar had everything; a pool table, a sweet jukebox, tranny hookers, open narcotic sales, and a guy who lived in the basement who smoked a lot of crack.

Locally, just a block away from me is my preferred watering hole, The Pub Down Under (as in, in the basement of a local restaurant, the Arapahoe Cafe):

Nothing fancy drink-wise, a few local beers and generously poured mixed drinks. Our regular server is a guy who grew up with my brother-in-law, you always see a few people from the neighborhood. Nightly pub food specials, great bbq. Tons of sports memorabilia around, folks who have stopped in the bar. That kinda place. Definitely the local hangout:

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

What I miss the most was going for a walk after dinner and tucking into a pub.

I haven't been going to my bar lately anyway, due to oldness, but I just found out there were shots fired at the Burgundy Room a few weeks ago.

You hang out in some clean-ass bars, BB, someone could walk in there and get CURED of hepatitis.

On a regular night you would find normal activities like Sully bleeding all over the bar from a fistfight while his girlfriend, Kayliegh, pukes all over the toilet with the seat down.

What torture is this thread?!
Lots of pubs in the UK have set up crowd funding schemes for regulars and well wishers to stockpile some funds; other people are buying gift cards (eg for a meal, rounds of drinks) for their local. Is this happening in the US?

It is. Any of the ones that serve food or make beer are selling it as take away or delivery. I'm afraid this is only a small help. A lot over waiters/waitresses here reply on tip money for the bulk of their income and that is a big hole to fill.
