The Kaleb Horton Deceased Latvian Foreign Minister Thread, 2021 edition
Re: The Kaleb Horton Deceased Latvian Foreign Minister Thread, 2021 edition
DMX was a big presence in my high school life and would pop up in grand ways (usually involving high school friends) in the years since. And Then There Was X was one of the few hip hop records I bought before really doing a deep dive at the end of high school and the big singles from those three albums he did in 98/99 were just all over the place in high school. His persona seemed a bit over the top and it probably was to some extent, so it's unfortunate that he succumbed to a lot of those excesses.
Also fond memories of blasting his music in the limo to my friend's wedding in 2012, getting blackout drunk and shouting his catch phrases at bars (mostly "whaaat!" and "ar! ar!") with certain friends, and his great and very surprise cameo in Chris Rock's 2016 movie Top Five. I've obviously got no defense about his personal/criminal/familial issues, but his music was a very unique and enjoyable presence in my life.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

DMX played a hotel ballroom here a few years ago.
I remember seeing flyers for DMX at the Sheraton.
I looked it up 2013.

Cant say I was a fan.

I checked to see how often we discussed X here and it was only me and Still216 which is unsurprising.

Definitely a flawed individual, no doubt. But nonetheless, I consider him a brilliant artist. That first record is so fucking menacing and dark.matedog wrote: ↑09 Apr 2021, 2:28pmDMX was a big presence in my high school life and would pop up in grand ways (usually involving high school friends) in the years since. This song is a tearjerker. One of my all time favs. He could go deep when he wanted to. Beautiful haunting masterpiece.

Thank goodness there's an abbreviation, all the time I've wasted saying "DM" like a chump.

Thanks everyone. Marty was a class guy and I regret I hadn't seen him for the past two years. You always think there's time.
