Yeah, I was struck by how square the audiences were. SNL must screen out people who like funny things from the audience, probably to help the audience response to most of the the rest of the show.

I listened to a quick interview with Jon Lovitz, who related the backstory of Norm's famous participation in the Bob Saget roast. If you haven't heard it—and, fuck, you really should; it's masterful—Norm told groaner after groaner joke, intentionally bombing. The backstory was that participants were told to tell raunchy jokes, because Saget is a seriously blue comedian. Norm the contrarian says fuck that, I'm going the other way. Initially, only Saget and Lovitz get what he's doing and are killing themselves. But what I found interesting is that when you see the footage, the audience is laughing, too. Lovitz says that never happened. The audience didn't get it at all, which made it so funny to those on stage. That the audience stayed confused or stoic makes the ploy all the better.

I wonder what they would have done if instead of humorless squares in the audience it was rich old white men?

Or, you guessed it, Frank Stallones.

I really appreciate that we've all been here so long, and know each other to the point that a reference like that could be made.

Of all the Norm clips that I dove into after his passing, this one killed me the most. Fuck it was funny and I hadn't heard it before.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Upon achieving this level of self-referential behaviour, sentience is all that's left.

It really is no exaggeration to say he was operating conceptually way beyond his peers. That and his age is what makes is death such a nutpunch. He was a guy whose creativity hadn't dimmed at all.
