I recall reading that back in the 60s and 70s, saying they liked Sidney Poitier was the go-to line of nervous whites in situations where they feared being called racist. Given that his first big film role was playing a brooding, borderline delinquent in The Blackboard Jungle, it's kinda funny he achieved the status of Safe and Respectable Negro Actor™ for white America.

Anyone seen Guess Who's Coming Over to Dinner in the last few years? Spencer Tracy and Kate Hepburn are liberal parents confronted with their secret racism when their daughter gets engaged to Sid, so they put him in a fucking kangaroo court and he's not only a doctor, but like 1% doctor who gives international speeches, etc, and that shit still ain't enough. I mean, good living/decent person wasn't enough he has to be superdoctor, and that didn't even cut it. I know that was the point of the movie, but I just think it aged horribly.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑07 Jan 2022, 1:02pmI recall reading that back in the 60s and 70s, saying they liked Sidney Poitier was the go-to line of nervous whites in situations where they feared being called racist. "In the Heat of the Night" and "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs!". Are a couple of my favourites.

I mean, it's the same basic point as Get Out, right? I haven't seen the movie super recently, but my recollection is some of the particulare social mores are a bit dated but the basic underlying message that affluent "i would have voted for obama for a third term if I could" libs are actually racist holds up pretty well.tepista wrote: ↑07 Jan 2022, 1:11pmAnyone seen Guess Who's Coming Over to Dinner in the last few years? I'll probably do a Portier watch this weeked so I'll see if my opinion changes.

Look at the Obamas, tho. No scandals, kids didn't get into shit, and he was dogged for stuff like wearing a tan suit or having dijon mustard. The bar is always set absurdly higher for those of the "wrong type" and any weird lapse is always more proving to the bigots. That's one of the things I liked about Ta-Nehesi Coates' description of Trump as America's first white president—he was wholly unqualified on his abilities, but he won by asserting that he was the white guy who would take back the place from the guy whose skin colour sullied it.tepista wrote: ↑07 Jan 2022, 1:11pmAnyone seen Guess Who's Coming Over to Dinner in the last few years? Oh yeah, for sure. I remember when wife and I saw it a couple years ago, we wondered what dad's response would have been if Sid was a successful businessman instead of a world's top doctor. But yeah, that was point of the whole thing, so..Flex wrote: ↑07 Jan 2022, 1:24pm

He's also a White Sox fan, which wasn't as invalidating as it should have been.
