M actually tearing up a little at this. Can't think of anyone I've spent so much time with (so to speak) outside my family over the last 20 years. A huge loss.
I’m sorry man. That sucks. As goofy as he could be, losing Harry in the 90s devastated me. He was my first announcer, and the voice I associated with the Cubs.
We’re on borrowed time with Uecker up in Milwaukee. I can’t imagine baseball without him.
Oh man. Ueck is gonna hurt and I’m not even a Brewers fan in the slightest.

About the only thing I miss about the Cubs right now is Pat Hughes on the radio.

Hughes is great. I remember when he was in Milwaukee. I was hoping Milwaukee could have pulled off a World Series for Ueck this year. He'll be 88 when the 2022 season starts, but he still sounds excellent. He's been the soundtrack to my summers for as long as I can remember.

For some reason, I thought he was older and deader.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Were you thinking of Harry Dean Stanton or Dean Jones? Who are both former Deans.

I don't know. He seemed like he was in his sixties in Blue Velvet/QL.

Hello,

Retired? Definitely! Their contract not renewed? I'd prefer this to remove any payments said dean would receive. Dead? no.

 It's fascinating to me why academics seek to higher admin when it's guaranteed to disappoint (at best) their colleagues. It really is thankless work with constant sniping from faculty.

Hello,

I think academics/instructors view administrative positions as opportunities to make more money (for some) and/or gain some power over the process at their institution. I agree about the constant sniping although it's often well-deserved. I may try an administrative role in a year or two but I would keep teaching and researching but to a more limited role. I would do so with the understanding that you're probably not going to please everyone.

The Boss has been department head a couple times. She's good at it—responsible and sensible—but gets no satisfaction from it. She's been asked to apply for a deanship before, but I told her that she'd hate it. I think she'd be good at it, fundamentally, but the successes would be way too limited compared to the hassles. Her experiences have confirmed to me that I'm unsuited to academia (i.e., the stuff outside the classroom). I'd become embittered with my colleagues in no time.
