He was that old-time, polite racist who thought that non-whites just needed to learn to act and think more white and all their problems would disappear. Metis had a significant advantage because they had some white in them already; it just needed to be cultivated.Flex wrote: ↑08 Dec 2021, 8:08pmThis places your dad significantly to the left of the contemporary us republican party on the matter of race relations.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Dec 2021, 8:05pmMy dad would have just been uncomfortable about that Negro and his strange, non-white views.

Re: MLB 2021
My favorite player of all time (I'm watching that game 7 right now too). The Buffalo Bisons were the Pirates farm team from 1979-82, and Stargell is the main reason I grew up with dual loyalties (Pirates/Yanks). Did I ever mention my close encounter with Stargell? The Pirates and Bisons had an exhibition game around 1981 at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo. I sat about 12 rows behind the Pirates' bench, which was just behind the first base line and a little beyond first base. Stargell sat in the middle of the bench with a 3-gallon bucket of Buffalo wings between his legs, and pretty much ate wings the whole game. I clearly recall a fan just behind me and to my right yelling out "hey WIllie, how are they?" Stargell (with a mouth full of chicken) held up a drumstick and, without looking back, gave it a mighty shake. I can still see the bit of chicken skin that flapped in the breeze. The crowd went wild.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Dec 2021, 8:02pmWillie fucking Stargell. He's 93 years old and has a single, 2 doubles, and the go ahead/winning homer in Game 7. Not quite Jeterian, but close.

I had one of their odd black hats with the yellow stripes back then (which I had bought at Cooperstown), as well as a bright yellow Pirates batting helmet. This game 7 brings back some memories for sure. I was a huge Dave Parker fan too.

Re: MLB 2021
At the time, I had no rooting interest. I would have started out with the Orioles because I was an Expos fan (my first and true love; I'm a Red Sox fan now, but as a kid I *loved* the Expos in the way only a kid does) and the Pirates edged the Expos that year. (It was worse the next year when the Expos lost the final series of the year, and the East, to the Phillies. That felt worse than any Red Sox defeat.) But the weirdness that a team could lose three of the first four and then make it to game seven was almost supernatural to me. I know that by game seven I was with the Pirates, not to be a frontrunner, but because I needed to see this impossibility. The Red Sox in 2004 did not seem nearly as bizarre because I wasn't ten.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑08 Dec 2021, 8:37pmI had one of their odd black hats with the yellow stripes back then (which I had bought at Cooperstown), as well as a bright yellow Pirates batting helmet. Re: MLB 2021
MLB Network's theme today is marathon games—an aside: this channel would be so much better if they dumped the talking heads shows and mostly showed old games—and it's Braves-Mets from the '99 NLCS. Which made me think about John Rocker. He's got to be a hardcore Trumpist/QAnon guy, right? The only thing I found was that, yup, in 2016 he was voting orange fascist.

Watching game 7 of 79 right now. Holy cow, does this bring back memories. I'm surprised at how many names I remember.

I've concluded that the 70s was the last great decade of baseball in terms of narrative. Shit was bizarre.Mimi wrote: ↑09 Dec 2021, 8:47pmAnd porn-staches! Jim Garner's could have its own zipcode.
