It's up to the individual. I did mine but most of the neighbors didn't bother and unfortunately many of the trees from neighboring properties touch high up so they can sill move from tree to tree.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 2:02pmHoly crap. Is there no banding program to protect the trees?

Damn, I had no idea the caterpillars were so ravenous. Do the trees die as a result of the defoliation?

If the tree is healthy it should be ok. New leaves will start while they are in the moth stage (they dont eat as moths) But if you get a few years of this it can definitely kill a tree especially if coupled with a drought or some other stress factor. I cant see next year being better.Sparky wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 3:13pmDamn, I had no idea the caterpillars were so ravenous. Do the trees die as a result of the defoliation?

Yup, I remember summers when tent caterpillars were in their cycle. Just walking on a sidewalk, caterpillars descending from trees, getting all over you. Wretched. That's horrible about the oak tree. Will it be able to survive the winter now?revbob wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 3:19pmYeah and it can make it unnearable to be outside as at times caterpillarsand their shit are literally raining from the trees.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 3:03pmSpeaking of personal responsibility …revbob wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 2:24pmIt's up to the individual. Here we have something called the bark beetle, I'm not sure if it's back east, but they have caused a heck of a lot of damage to our forests here in the west.revbob wrote: ↑19 Jun 2022, 3:17pmIf the tree is healthy it should be ok. Hello,
Not Vermont, but close enough - I just got back from Saratoga. It's the best place to be in late July/August. I even came out +$50 at the track.

I love stuff like this because it's liken every region has a lake monster myth. Saskatchewan, for example, has the Turtle Lake Monster. It's pure fun to think that there's some kind of kraken or hydra lurking at the bottom of a lake.

I love that his name is Champ, like some little boy's bulldog.

I love this picture. The two women seem thoroughly disgusted with this guy.
