Yup, they sound almost like bumblebees, or like a fan on high speed. I’ve had them poking around at various flowers within a few feet of me when working in my mom’s garden.Low Down Low wrote: ↑26 Jul 2021, 3:49pmThe "humming" actually comes from the flapping of the wings - saw it in a doc recently! Never seen one in the flesh, magnificent birds.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑26 Jul 2021, 2:50pmNice! My parents occasionally get hummingbirds in their yard. Almost didn't notice him there among the violets.

Re: Wildlife Encounters
Never seen them in my own garden – they don’t seem to care for the flowers on my vegetable plants – but my mom has more colorful flowering plants in her garden that they seem to love. I think she plants a few things that are supposed to attract them, but I can’t remember what they are. I was over there a couple years ago, on my knees weeding, and had a blue jay land on my shoulder for about 20 seconds. My dad ran for a camera but was too slow.revbob wrote: ↑26 Jul 2021, 4:26pmYeah mine was taken thru the screen. Taking a breather.
Re: Wildlife Encounters
Very good pic Rev. Now you've got me wanting to try again, perhaps setting up my tripod to see if I can figure out how to trigger the shutter remotely.

Re: Wildlife Encounters
Thanks Sparky and BBE. I got some nice pics I think with just my phone. It was pretty cool because it was just a few feet away at one point.

Very nice Rev. Looks like what ya got there is a female ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris).
