Nice! My parents occasionally get hummingbirds in their yard. Almost didn't notice him there among the violets.
Yeah its been flying around all day I finally got lucky with a pic.
We've got a feeder in our yard, along with lots of plants they seem to like, but I've never been able to get a decent picture, they've just too fast for me to get focused on.
Yeah mine was taken thru the screen. They definitely more around a lot.

The "humming" actually comes from the flapping of the wings - saw it in a doc recently! Never seen one in the flesh, magnificent birds.
Yup, they sound almost like bumblebees, or like a fan on high speed. I’ve had them poking around at various flowers within a few feet of me when working in my mom’s garden.

Never seen them in my own garden – they don’t seem to care for the flowers on my vegetable plants – but my mom has more colorful flowering plants in her garden that they seem to love. I think she plants a few things that are supposed to attract them, but I can’t remember what they are. I was over there a couple years ago, on my knees weeding, and had a blue jay land on my shoulder for about 20 seconds. My dad ran for a camera but was too slow.

Very good pic Rev. Now you've got me wanting to try again, perhaps setting up my tripod to see if I can figure out how to trigger the shutter remotely.

Thanks Sparky and BBE. I got some nice pics I think with just my phone. It was pretty cool because it was just a few feet away at one point.

Very nice Rev. Looks like what ya got there is a female ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris).

Nice pics.

Is that the Beaneater estate and Squirrel Refuge in the background?
