I think this is either an eastern king snake or an eastern rat snake. I didn't get close enough to see the markings.

Yeah my first thought was rat snake or black snake.
And sorry, I’ve watched Romancing the Stone probably once a year since I saw it in the theatre years ago, and can’t help saying “goddamn bushmaster” whenever I see a snake, even if it’s a 10-inch garter snake.
