I actually went down a few weeks ago. My uncle has been in failing health for the last year and I thought he was on the way out (current issue is kidney failure). Aunt has parkinson's and is in denial about it. I think my uncle is holding on longer than he should to try to support my aunt as he is mentally razor sharp. It's a rough situation that I won't bore everyone with the details. It's a real trip going down there because I used to go there every summer in the late 80s early 90s and the house is EXACTLY the same as it was back then, just deteriorated. It's weird being there and being flooded with warm/fun memories, but seeing how decrepit everything is reminds me that those memories are a looong time ago.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I’m *always* old. I’m also mostly immature. Somewhere in between that is comfort.Marky Dread wrote: ↑06 Dec 2022, 11:18amSo you are old when it suits you.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑06 Dec 2022, 8:47am

I learned to count from Sesame Street too, but I'll be damned if I could remember any of the humans.

Yeah. So support now is primarily by my 74 year old dad who lives in North Carolina.JennyB wrote: ↑06 Dec 2022, 11:44amWas your cousin their only child?matedog wrote: ↑06 Dec 2022, 11:27amI actually went down a few weeks ago. To clarify, in spite of how emotionally heavy the trip was, they seemed really happy that I visited and we had a lot of great talks. My sister came down the day after I left and had a similar visit.

Jim Stewart, who along with his sister Estelle Axton, founded Stax Records in Memphis (STewart + AXton = Stax) in 1957. Stax provided a gritty, soulful counterpoint to the more polished pop of Motown. Stewart left Stax in 1972, but came back in 1975 to help save the financially strained company. It wasn't enough and the label went bankrupt in December 1975, with Stewart losing pretty much everything in the process. He was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 (Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers).
Top-5 Stax singles (according to me):
1. Sam & Dave - Hold On! I'm Comin'
2. Otis Redding & Carla Thomas - Tramp
3. Wilson Pickett - In the Midnight Hour
4. Eddie Floyd - Knock on Wood
5. Johnnie Taylor - Who's Making Love
I didn't rank (Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay because it was such a departure from the Stax sound. That said, it's probably the best single the label ever released.

Most people here won't knowh him but a guy named Twitch died by suicide at only 40 years old. He was a dancer and hosted a dance contest TV show, the only reason I know who he is is because my wife is dancer and she loves those shows
