I never gave any thought to how fucking phony that "tear down this wall" soundbite is. It's not like they decided on the spot.

The dumb thing about that line and that speech was that it was primarily addressed to the American right-wingers. Reagan was taking flak for buddying up with Gorbachev, so that speech was him saying, "I'm still Mr. Cold War Tough Guy!" It had absolutely zero effect on the Kremlin.

I'll get a large with vodka sauce, borscht, caviar, and can I get cabbage on half of it?

I had read he'd been in poor health for some time. I wonder if he was even aware of all the things Putin has done to undermine the changes Gorbachev had made for the former Soviet Union? If so, can you imagine how disheartening is must have been for him seeing Putin take the country backwards and in to the cold war again?

These aren't your daddy's Republicans. Or, at least, these aren't Republicans having to sublimate their instincts because of the Cold War.

Back in the 80s, the Religious Right was sure that Gorbachev's wine stain was the mark of the beast. Good times, good times, when Bible prophecy was swinging for the fences.

I had never seen that before. Sums up Gorbi's legacy pretty well, sadly.
