I'm pretty sure Ive read there's no real statistical evidence that players are extra good in contract years or extra bad once they have their contracts in hand. It's probably just a mix of random variance and extra scrutiny.
My gut says you're wrong.

Aaron Judge did pretty good in his contract year. He's gotten paid, and he's doing pretty good now too. It all depends on who the player is and how good a player they really are. If having one good "career year" among several average years makes some desperate team overpay based on that one year, that is not the player's fault. The quality of the player's character matters too.
From what I see there's still a little hope

Yeah. Judge had several good seasons leading up to his contract year vs having "a contract year "

Yes he did, no question about that. But remember the Yankees tried to sign him to an extention before the contract year and he basically laughed at them, then went out and set an AL record for HRs. But again Judge, when healthy, is arguably the best player in the league, certainly worth the contract he got. He bet on himself and was rewarded.

On a different note, today is the anniversary of the Mets' first ever no-hitter. A franchise that's had some top pitchers, like Seaver, Koosman, Darling, Gooden to name but a few and never had a no-hitter of any kind. The franchise went over 8000 games until Johan Santana, coming off shoulder surgery, pitched an incredible game and pretty much was never the same again physically due to the number of pitches he threw that night. Santana was such a great pitcher in his own right and that magical night was one i'll never forget.

On the upside, he's already pitched more quantity and quality than I was expecting out of him this season.

The mistake was not trading him in mid-May when his value had skyrocketed.

I understood moving on from Eovaldi, but Wacha seemed a solid, fairly cheap back-end of the rotation guy. Yet, they let Wacha go and got Klubberlang.

Evoldi will revert to his steaky self soon enough which will be preceded or followed by an injury
