Is there still that kind of pressure for the Yankees and Mets? Maybe it's the lack of Steinbrenner rants now, but it doesn't seem like it's as urgent in the press as it used to be. (Then again, it's not like I'm living in the area, so I'm probably way off.)revbob wrote: ↑27 Jan 2023, 9:30pmPlus the challenge associated with playing in NYC.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑27 Jan 2023, 9:27pmHoly macaroni. I wonder whether the players and Showalter feel extra pressure to win a championship with that kind of payroll. That is, does it become a positive incentive or a burden of expectation?

I think it is, but Weller is perhaps better suited to answer.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑27 Jan 2023, 9:40pmIs there still that kind of pressure for the Yankees and Mets? Re: MLB 2023
I will not endeavor to speculate what Showalter thinks or feels. I think the pressure level totally depends upon the results. The media will certainly jump all over them should they not play well. There certainly is the distinct possibility that us Mets fans are heading for a huge letdown. But really, that is true every season, just that this one will have much more money spent trying to achieve success. I don't worry about how much guys get paid since its not my money, i'm all in favor of athletes being paid what they can get, I understand that money spent does not necessarily equal positive results when its professional athletics and my expectations tend to be more realistic. My hopes are high but so many things can happen during a season, so keeping my hopes and my expectations on different planes seems to help me deal with it all.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑27 Jan 2023, 9:27pmHoly macaroni. The Mets play in Queens and while Queens is technically "NYC", you have to cross a bridge or pass through a tunnel to get to Manhattan, Queens is really just Long Island East. lol.

I'd love to see the 2023 Metropolitans pull off the big one (assuming the Red Sox go nowheresville)

Re: MLB 2023
The New York media is still as bloodthirsty and salacious as ever, obnoxious headlines and mountain-out-of-a-molehill reporting. The media will pounce on any NY team that flounders, especially the Mets now with all the money they are spending. The Yankees have always been the main subject on those terms previous to this year so now the media has two huge teams to subject to their particular brand of rabble-rousing reporting style. Its like the media only cares about the money.

In other shocking news, puppies like to hump your leg.
But, yeah, for good or ill, the Mets are going to be covered in a way that constantly ties their record to the payroll. They'll be massive underachievers or "for the kind of money, they better win" snark. The media will be praying for the former for that blood-in-the-water easy writing.

No question about it. I'm sure the NY Post headline writers are already writing them down for later use. Hell they probably have their AI ChatBot programmed and ready to slander.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑28 Jan 2023, 7:27amIn other shocking news, puppies like to hump your leg.

The Mets are damned if they win, and damned if they don't.

On the upside, I expect Satan has let Steinbrenner know that the Mets are outspending the Yankees and winning the off-season headlines, which has to be adding to George's eternal torture.weller259 wrote: ↑28 Jan 2023, 9:17pmNo question about it.
