Andy Rourke of the Smiths dead at 59. Pancreatic cancer.

Horrifically undervalued even in his own band. On a personal note, a huge influence on me.

Shocking news. As Kory said, very undervalued even in his own band. Inserted a real liveliness to Marr's songs, not just co-ordinating with Joyce. I always think of "Rusholme Ruffians" when he comes up—he makes the song something special.

Heartbreaking. I can’t overstate how important The Smiths have been to me. Andy was their secret weapon. His bass playing was transcendent.

He never had the visibility of Morrissey and Marr, but his playing was always perfect. The Smiths would not have been The Smiths without Andy Rourke.

Andy Rourke and Jim Brown. Damn.
I've seen film of Jim Brown running the football and he was just incredible. Powerhouse. He was great in the movie "I'm Gonna Git You, Sucka". A legendary american hero.
I loved the Smiths' sound, Andy was a big part of the sound they made. Only 59 too, really sad.
How IS Dick Cheney still alive?
From what I see there's still a little hope

Martin Amis. Technically prodigiously gifted writer though generally preferred his observational reportage pieces to his fiction. Money and Time's Arrow are two I really enjoyed and think they both stand up pretty well today.
