The Kaleb Horton Deceased Latvian Foreign Minister Thread, 2023 Edition
Re: The Kaleb Horton Deceased Latvian Foreign Minister Thread, 2023 Edition
I think I saw an interview a while back about the various bassists in the Damned having battled cancer, not sure if that was truly the cause, but 63 is just too young.

Played on the first 3 albums by the Saints - which are all near perfect.

I have a stack of his books that I've been collecting in order to have a log of his stuff to read, but so far have only done Dead Babies, which I liked.Low Down Low wrote: ↑20 May 2023, 5:40pmMartin Amis. Technically prodigiously gifted writer though generally preferred his observational reportage pieces to his fiction. Money and Time's Arrow are two I really enjoyed and think they both stand up pretty well today.

Algy doesn't play on the debut album. Only the added tracks to the cd issues.WestwayKid wrote: ↑22 May 2023, 1:56pmPlayed on the first 3 albums by the Saints - which are all near perfect.
Kym Bradshaw was the bassist on the 10 track debut album. He also played with The Lurkers and Captain Sensible's short lived band King.
But those 3 albums are damn near perfect.

I was working slowly through his canon a few years ago but hadn't got to Dead Babies before I left it. He could occasionally impress me, even dazzle, but such was his reputation and talent, i think I maybe expected too much and was very often underwhelmed by his output and that's before you get to the oft repeated charges of misogyny and such like.Kory wrote: ↑22 May 2023, 2:05pmI have a stack of his books that I've been collecting in order to have a log of his stuff to read, but so far have only done Dead Babies, which I liked.Low Down Low wrote: ↑20 May 2023, 5:40pmMartin Amis. Rolf Harris disgraced artist and singer dead at 93. Won't be many losing sleep over this one.

93 is a ripe old age for a monster. Which is the way these things tend to go. The world got 34 years more of him than we did Andy Rourke and we should believe in a loving god? Yeah, fuck that.

I think we're all barking up the wrong tree if we want an older male author free of misogyny charges. My favorite author is Philip Roth so I'm well used to it!Low Down Low wrote: ↑23 May 2023, 6:18amI was working slowly through his canon a few years ago but hadn't got to Dead Babies before I left it. I think the thing about Roth is he wrote some truly magnificent novels that are generally in the discussion when lists of greatest American novels are being compiled while I'm not sure you could seriously say the same for Amis in a British context. I'm not certain he was even that consistent either.Kory wrote: ↑23 May 2023, 4:01pmI think we're all barking up the wrong tree if we want an older male author free of misogyny charges.
