Couldn't agree more, but it's my wife's "go to" mindless background TV series each evening. Feel my pain!

The Boss prefers mindless tv to unwind in the evening. Drives me crazy. She does like stuff that is well done, too—she's far more exploring than I am—but she does like some seriously stupid crap (e.g., anything on TLC) that annoys the fuck out of me.

"Reality" competition shows or really "reality" tv in general. I came home once and my wife was watching something Bride or Bride something and had my young daughter there too. Oh no it was "Say Yes to the Dress" I think. Its like the Taylor Swift of TV. And exposing a young girl to such garbage. I was not happy. Project Runway which I always refer to as Project Runaway. "Did all these people come from broken homes?" I would ask. Oh well

No, it didn’t Pauly. It really didn’t.

The first year I taught my popular culture class, I had a student who kept on asking me about "90 Day Fiance." I told him over and over that I had nothing of value you to say about it. Like, I can say that I don't like that shit because of A, B, C, but that's not much different than me explaining why I don't watch hockey or basketball.revbob wrote: ↑23 Jan 2023, 8:39pm"Reality" competition shows or really "reality" tv in general. I fucking love 90 Day. Last few seasons have been less engaging though. Shines an interesting light on the impact of globalism Americans otherwise wouldn’t see. Below Deck is a lot of fun too and they have legit hard service jobs.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑23 Jan 2023, 8:43pmThe first year I taught my popular culture class, I had a student who kept on asking me about "90 Day Fiance." Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yeah, I’ve heard arguments that the show can be used to illustrate contemporary issues of colonialism and cultural imperialism. Which, cool, if people can pull that from it, all power to them.matedog wrote: ↑23 Jan 2023, 9:30pmI fucking love 90 Day. Last few seasons have been less engaging though. There's no other show I dislike that much yet have friends that I respect that enjoy it. It's really weird.

Same. They'll relate some wacky antics from an episode, often preceded by "You'll like this" (because it involves comics or science), and I'll be dumbfounded.matedog wrote: ↑24 Jan 2023, 12:17amThere's no other show I dislike that much yet have friends that I respect that enjoy it. I had someone try and tell me its smart comedy not his exact words but that's what he was getting at. And also implied that what I liked was somehow low brow.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑24 Jan 2023, 7:18amSame.
