I listened to that album a lot when it came out, but haven't listened to it much since. I forgot how great it is.Silent Majority wrote: ↑22 Feb 2023, 11:00amI know where I'm staying for my Albarn/Simonon collaboration needs.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑22 Feb 2023, 10:54amThat's my vague recollection. Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Gorillaz is a project and brief that brings the best out of Albarn and sidelines his least interesting traits. A lot of artists get to his stage of career and don't know where on the canvas they should start scribbling, and that leads to work which isn't as exciting as what they released when they were young. By aiming to do MTV pop music but better, he can do so much more lively work than his contemporaries. The Gallagher brothers are pale copies of their 90s selves and are irrelevant to all but the least discerning authentocrats. The dull shit he did with tGtBatQ shows that it doesn't come natural to Albarn - he's just stumbled across the right project.matedog wrote: ↑22 Feb 2023, 11:22amI listened to that album a lot when it came out, but haven't listened to it much since. A) Hooks are overrated
B) The album is catchy to me

Gorillaz is okay - decent music, decent quality...but is it exciting? I want exciting music.

It's exciting to people who like groove-based tunes.gkbill wrote: ↑22 Feb 2023, 10:59pmHello,Silent Majority wrote: ↑22 Feb 2023, 11:37amGorillaz is a project and brief that brings the best out of Albarn and sidelines his least interesting traits. Gonna be the weird outlier here and say I also could not care about Gorillaz either, and I often enjoy grooves.

Re: The Good Takes, The Bad Takes and The Queen Takes
I enjoyed the first Gorillaz album a fair amount, and there's some decent stuff on the rest, but if you add up all the best that Albarn has put out there into the world the sum of it is still pretty well short of greatness.

Sometimes you just have to concede that the group knows more than you. It's rough, I know, but that's how true growth occurs.
