We had to destroy the village to save it.

Two of my books were used to train AI for Meta. Fuckers. I couldn't get any reach on Instagram when I tried to promote my stuff. Rumor was that Meta actually suppressed a lot of promotions. Yet it's okay for them to steal it and make money off of it.

Can't help but think some kind of class action suit will be in the offing.

Meta has some deep pockets but I'd love to see it happen.

Well that sucks, seems like there should be or needs to be laws created to prevent such a thing from happening. Given that AI is growing so quickly, this is only going to get worse if it's not somehow regulated.

I know, and it's not happening fast enough.

I love that, to date, no one has been able to articulate any actual society-wide benefits to having AI. Just nebulous shareholder profit generation (maybe!).

Hello,

I've tried to keep up with AI and higher education and, as you alluded to, people keep talking about the impact AI will have on higher education - but the conversation never gets down to the bones. AI can produce great mayonnaise but never good cheddar.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
So does all the anxiety, including from serious people in the world of AI, about human extinction feel like religious hysteria to you?

What drives me crazy about this is that this is my world. I talk to the people who believe that stuff all the time, and increasingly, a lot of them believe that it would be good to wipe out people and that the AI future would be a better one, and that we should wear a disposable temporary container for the birth of AI. I hear that opinion quite a lot.

Wait, that’s a real opinion held by real people?

Many, many people. Just the other day I was at a lunch in Palo Alto and there were some young AI scientists there who were saying that they would never have a “bio baby” because as soon as you have a “bio baby,” you get the “mind virus” of the [biological] world. And when you have the mind virus, you become committed to your human baby. But it’s much more important to be committed to the AI of the future. And so to have human babies is fundamentally unethical.
