I know some people forego treatment for a lot of good reasons.
Pierre Trudeau (Justin's dad) was diagnosed with cancer not long after an alzheimer's diagnosis. He opted against treatment because he concluded he'd rather die than live having lost his faculties. I'm pretty sure I'd make the same choice. It's also suggestive that if hadn't gotten cancer, he'd have pursued suicide at some point.
Zevon did it too for good reasons. This is the blurb that rubbed me the wrong way: "Lewis refused medical treatment for her cancer, saying in 2024 that her plan "was to get out excessive toxins in my body. I felt like my body is intelligent, I know that to be true. Our bodies are brilliantly made... I decided to keep my tumor and try to work it out of my body a different way.""
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yeah, sounds like she was a Steve Jobs-esque quack.

My father in law has advanced dementia and also recently got diagnosed with leukemia. They aren't going to treat the leukemia. Totally different situation though.

I'm so sorry to see this. An absolutely horrible and distressing situation for all involved. You and VH have my sympathies.

So sorry to hear that. Dementia got my mum and has robbed my father-in law of his short term memory. A cruel disease. My best wishes to your father-in -law.

The mention of leukemia made me think of my dad—that's what got him—and to realize that next month it'll be 25 years. Days grind but years fly.

I'm so sorry, Mrs. B. Awful to go through.

Thanks all! I feel the worst for my MIL because as a nurse, she takes on this burden more than necessary. And she is such a kind woman. We went to see him yesterday and it's just so bad. Nobody should be made to live like this. I appreciate all of the kind words, everyone!
