A mate in work who is a part time beekeeper brewed some mead the other month and gave me a generous sample today, I knocked it back and it was dry, full of flavour and delicious. Head's spinning however as he neglected to say earlier it was reading at 18%.

There's a meadery right down the street from my house. There's a lot of really good mead, it's much more akin to wine than I'd realized. Great stuff (and yeah, with a punch).

Beer nerds have gotten into mead real hard. I’ve learned to enjoy it, particularly the fruited stuff, but I don’t actively seek it out.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I don't think I'd ever actively seek it out, but it's fun enough. Definitely huge in the ren fair/d&d scenes.

I've had it once—a student gave the Boss a bottle and I discovered it in a cabinet. Ridiculously sweet and viscous. Like an alcohol syrup. I'd have a hard time being persuaded to try some again.

Yeah, that was my pre-being meadery adjacent experience and it was shocking how good the mead actually was. Given your predilection for wine, I think you'd like some good dry meads.
