I'd heard of the Monks but (a) I didn't know the band was made up of Americans and (b) I didn't they'd given themselves monk haircuts. Pure German whimsy!

There's a good documentary film about them, maybe made about 10 years ago.

One of the members is/was the mayor of a town in northern Minnesota.

ETA: It was Gary Burger, singer/guitarist, and according to Wikipedia, the town was Turtle River, and he died of pancreatic cancer on March 14, 2014, at the age of 71.
