For the last few months, John Byrne has been putting up pages of his X-Men fantasy series. Basically, what if Claremont left the book and not Byrne. He's uploaded, I dunno, seven issues now. And while the pencils are still fantastic, my god is he a mediocre writer. The stories have been really dull, but worse is that his narrative ADD. Every page or two he has to flash to outer space or the Savage Land or Xavier's mansion or the Baxter Building or …. Just constantly one scene cutting to another scene cutting to another scene. For all Byrne's complaints about the state of comics and non-traditional storytelling, it's extremely postmodern in its constant jumping from one narrative to the next. No flow at all.
To be fair, Claremont's revisiting of the title over the years is also impossible to read without falling asleep. The only one I really got into was his third run at one of the flagships because Alan Davis was on pencils.
I'm definitely not here to suggest Claremont is superior. Byrne in the early 80s was a fantastic storyteller—his FF was mesmerizing—but his writing on this faux series is both dull and poorly constructed. I can see why Marvel passed on publishing it. It wouldn't just be the PR hell from people combing thru all the offensive things he's said in the past twenty years, but that the stories themselves just aren't interesting at all. Yay, the X-Men going down to the Savage Land. Yay, the X-Men fight some Sentinels. But there's also flipping back and forth to the Shiar and other places every couple pages, complete with his narrator telling people they'll have to wait to see what happens because he's moving the action elsewhere. It's just awful writing or construction. The art, tho, is still great.

Editor's note: Slight art tweak. In panel 3, make the girl's eyes roll up to convey sarcasm.

In that first panel, she's like "oh no you come back here and burn with me"

Saying look out during an inferno counts as saving someone? Man, the bar for heroism is pretty fucking low. Hey, revbob, don't listen to any Katy Perry today. Yay, I'm a hero!

Panel 4: Mark ducks out of sight and starts snickering. "Stupid, Rusty," he thinks.

Mark didn't try very hard to save Dr. Camel, either. This is why he's a nature expert—he knows that, fuck it, lots of creatures gonna die. Circle of life and all that.

I've been re-reading Brubaker and Phillips' Fatale and am convinced that it would make a superior tv adaptation on a streaming service or HBO (something that allows for the sex and violence). One season of each of Josephine's various extended events, all tied by the larger narrative. I so want that to happen.
