We've got 3 cats and my experience has been they aren't the best listeners.
I've found that if, like, you drop something and swear loudly, all the cats take notice and give you a wide berth.
I think they listen and understand more than they let on.

We have rubber bands between the knobs on the pulls for our linen closets because 2 of our 3 like to paw the doors open and we keep cleaning supplies on the lower shelves. The rubber bands prevent the doors from opening enough for them to gain access, but we hear "kathunk, kathunk, kathunk". Their fave time to do this is usually between 4 & 5 am. If I get out of bed to scold them, they're long gone before I even get to the hallway, so I just holler "stop it" from my bed, and lo and behold, they know exactly what I'm hollering about and they cease and desist. Until the next time that is.
Not with the current group, but our previous duo I could get them to stop certain activities—like jumping on the kitchen counter—with just a look. Which makes me sound like a tyrant, but it was more a case that they learned the rule was, apparently, no jumping on the counter if anyone is watching.

Zoë is transfixed by that stuff to the point of pawing at the screen (a problem because she's not good at keep her claws in), while the other two have to be in the right mood.

Lic ignores it completely. She associates bird sounds with looking out the window. That's where the birds are, not on the tv. So when she hears the birds, she'll just run to the nearest window and scan the yard.

Neither is Zoë. Luke's the only one not repeating grade two for the fifth time.

Cats have better vision than we do, pretty sure they can read small type as well.
