One of our original cats, Pagan, was maybe a year old when she grabbed a small roasted chicken from the counter and started pulling it down the hallway. The bird was sufficiently hairy by the time we got it back that nobody was eating it.

Piggybacking on what Mimi said, we're pretty tidy, but with 3 cats, anything that hits the floor is furry, regardless of how quick you pick it up.

I dialed up an aquarium video on youtube and Zoë is transfixed. I've done the bird/squirrel feeder in the woods before, but she tends to get too excited and swat at the tv. But this is nice and slow and steady, so she's just rapt.

I went into the pet store today to see if they had any cats that I could play with through the glass, but they had none. On the way out the door, I saw two guinea pigs and began to get ideas.

It's adorable how obsessed she becomes. That she's the only one of the three makes it even more precious.

They look so adorable when they're locked in like that.

It's like partially unlocking the predator in the DNA. We've mostly tamped down those instincts by keeping them inside and serving them food, but the code is still active.

Did he ever go behind the tv searching?

Licorice would do something like that. When she'd hear the birds, she'd run to the window because that's where she had seen and heard them before.

Does yours do that?

Yeah, Zoë will hop up and paw a bit at the screen then run around behind. Funny that you mention the window, tho, as she's the only one who does hang out at the window looking at birds. Luke and Charlotte do, but they don't do the tv thing.

When we first got a betta fish, Scout was transfixed. Now she couldn't care less. Which I should be thankful for, because she probably just wanted to eat poor Finny.

That would always be my fear. Not just eating them but just make them live in a state of fear as this predator is up close.

My mother in law's dog was put to sleep yesterday, at an impressive 15.5 years old. It's sad but her body was giving out so it wasn't exactly unexpected and was a pretty obviously correct cll to make. Although it wasn't our dog, James saw sassy regularly enough that he came to think of sassy as "his" pet. This will be his first real experience with loss. We've talked with him a couple times now about it and I think he's trying to work out what it all really means. I suspect in a few weeks it'll hit a little harder when "grammie" starts showing up without sassy around.
“As I traveled, I came to believe that people’s desires and aspirations were as much a part of the land as the wind, solitary animals, and the bright fields of stone and tundra. And, too, that the land existed quite apart from these.”
