Thanks guys. I went out and bought a new tank yesterday (a 10 gallon - Finny was in a five gallon) and am in the process of doing the nitrogen cycle. A lot of people think bettas can just live in a small bowl, but they really need at least five gallons and a filter and heater. Anyway, I plan on getting a koi betta (example below) and am going to name him Jaws.

Not exactly a pet, but for the past two weeks we've had a pigeon bopping around in our backyard. Comes around for a few minutes several times each morning. It's jarring to me because I associate pigeons with concrete, not grass.

A rare moment of inspiration and handiwork. When we were renting a condo for the first few years here, we bought a couple padded platforms that fit underneath window sills so cats can look out the window as well as snooze. When we bought our house, we couldn't use them because the windows all have decent wells for cats to sit in. But I held onto the platforms hoping I'd be able to use them again. The other day, the cats were all at the front door because a squirrel was making an ass of himself. They could partially see out the window, but it's about two and half feet off the ground. I thought that'd be a great place for that platform, but then we wouldn't be able to open the door well. Then it it hit me: folding brackets that lock, like for folding shelves. Keep it up except when you need to open the door. Bought two sets—front and back door—and installed 'em, and they work like a charm. I almost feel like a proper dad.

We got a new betta! His name is Gefilte and he's super cute. He was housed in a dinky cup and is now residing in a warm, filtered 10 gallon tank with live plants. I love him!

You're a good cat dad.

I did that on purpose to be super Jewy. The other name I was considering was Jaws - to be ironic, like how big guys are called Tiny. But I went with Gefilte to fight the rampant antisemitism going on right now. :shifty:

That fish already has a three-week engagement at the Catskills.

He already flared at Scott and Ari, so I'm obviously his favorite. I'm his alpha. His alpha betta. HIYO

Does the poor fish know how this story ends?

A question for those with old cats: what behaviors did you start noticing that were different from when they were a little younger?

Mine are 12. While I know Licorice has a kidney issue and has always been high maintenance, her behavior hasn't alarmed me. Butters has always been lazy and healthy but now I can't tell if he's sick, stressed because of a recent event (flooded basement) or if he's just getting older.
