Gene Rayburn looked like a thawed caveman to me.
That said, and to share my next lecture research, I'm going to do something on disco and an unsettling middle-class hedonism of the 70s, including Match Game, which exhibited this creepy swinger vibe.

I fucking love Match Game but the innuendo could be seriously creepy. And there was definitely drinking going on backstage between tapings.
It was the 70s, man. Peace.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑06 Aug 2022, 4:38pmI fucking love Match Game but the innuendo could be seriously creepy. And there was definitely drinking going on backstage between tapings.
Which is, basically, my working thesis for that lecture. If the 60s was good acid (well, it wasn't but it had that rep), then the 70s was acid laced with cheap bourbon and polyester residue. The more that I consider the cultural expression of the 60s vs the 70s, the latter is just fucking grotesque and weird. It's gloriously garish, hypnotic in its unsightliness.Mimi wrote: ↑06 Aug 2022, 6:56pmIt was the 70s, man. If the late 60's were Haight-Ashbury, the 70's were Vegas.
I ain't gonna lie, I'm really jazzed to work on it. I probably won't be able to start until September, but this is going to give me an opportunity to pursue my favourite kind of research, that predicated on the idea that something is fucking weird. I've often told students that when they come across something that makes them think, "That's weird!" that's a muse tapping them on the shoulder and telling them to investigate further. Weird is good, weird is glorious, weird is its own fuel and momentum.Mimi wrote: ↑06 Aug 2022, 7:30pmI want to hear this lecture.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑06 Aug 2022, 7:10pmWhich is, basically, my working thesis for that lecture. That was The Newlywed Game, but the same bizarre era.
Were you trying to seduce him?
