There are people who will always try to eliminate fun where they dont think it belongs. Yes there are people who don't believe in fun in sports. They may not realize it or do it intentionally but their actions speak their truth.

Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
I once had a disastrous job interview related to this. I can't quite remember what it was for—some kind of bullshit consulting company. There were supposed to be three people interviewing, but one of the bosses was late from lunch. The interview was pretty bland, I didn't know what I was doing, whatever. Halfway thru shows up and immediately goes seriously alpha prick, clearly trying to humble me and look tough for the one woman in the room. (I've wondered whether he'd been boozing it up.)
So the question comes around to what kind of work environment I preferred. I said I sought a place where people knew what their job was and could be counted on to hold up their end, but at the same time the atmosphere was relaxed and people could still enjoy each other's company. He just lays into me about how you're either someone who wants to work or someone who wants to goof off, that you can't be focused and relaxed at the same time. I had no answer, but he didn't want one either.
What's funny is that a couple years later, all the big tech start-ups were emphasizing just that—work hard, but go play video games or whatever during breaks to decompress. Anyway, no, shockingly, a job offer was not forthcoming. No great loss for me.

Ive nevet had an interview like that but Ive ended up working for people like that. Ive had jobs over the years that I enjoyed and we all worked hard and got things done. We also had some fun, not goofing off but just enjoyed the environment. And each time sooner or later some new "leadership" comes along and institutes changes that eliminates the fun aspects under the misguided belief that fun and happy employees is inefficiency and money lost.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑14 Jul 2021, 10:00pmI once had a disastrous job interview related to this. Re: Return of the Mighty Observations Thread
Companies go on about the bottom line—the results—but that's never enough. It's about demonstrating power and control. I remember reading some advice column where a manager wanted advice on how to deal with an employee who was quite excellent, but finished early every day and then sat at their desk for the last half hour dicking around. The person was setting a bad example and should be reprimanded, right? Why would you punish a really effective employee, asked the columnist? Send them home or give them a bonus to do more work, but punishing a good worker for being a good worker?revbob wrote: ↑14 Jul 2021, 11:13pmIve nevet had an interview like that but Ive ended up working for people like that. Absolutely. That's kind of what I meant - the nightmare hockey parents with kids his age have likely moved up to the more competitive leagues. I want him to enjoy the competition. I do not want to have to deal with other parents.gkbill wrote: ↑14 Jul 2021, 4:49pmHello,JennyB wrote: ↑14 Jul 2021, 9:51amHa! This is going to be a nightmare.
