Doing some early yardwork today. We have a rain barrel that has been set up in the back, but is more useful in the front, so I had to rejig the downspout. As I got outside, a neighbour I hadn't met before—maybe five houses down—came by and started chatting. He's around five-two, 225—basically an egg—and we talk renos and neighbours. He starts going in on a neighbour he despises, who he claims is operating some kind of saw mill in his garage, and the other neighbours had to get together to put a stop to it. But this guy allegedly has moved it to his basement. Anyway, I relate this because of his description of the guy: "He's one of these fucking millennials who thinks they can do whatever the fuck they want, just an entitled prick." The conversation ended with him saying, "A hundred years ago, neighbours didn't have these kinds of problems. Someone pulls that shit, everyone gets together and gives him a good beating and that's the end of that." Cool, I found the one Conservative voter on our block (this is an absurdly Liberal/NDP block)!

These guys (or gals) only strike up conversations like this to see if you're one of them.

Yeah, I know, which means my Sex Pistols shirt isn't sending the kind of vibes it would have years ago.

Feel fortunate he's five housed down, you may be able to avoid him from now on.

I have no idea how long he's been on the block—we've been here almost seven years now—and I've never seen him waddle by, so I'm not expecting a reunion. And by saying that, I've fated myself to having conversations with him every week this summer. :disshame:

Well now that he's found a kindred spirit he'll be stopping by with a cup to Tim Hortons and talk about those damn liberals ruining the country.

We have, no exaggeration, five coffee shops within 3 blocks of our house—and we live in primarily residential neighbourhood (just some light commercial on the main street up the block—but none are Tim's. Nearest Tim's is probably 10–12 blocks away. Huzzah for gentrification!

I remember reading many years ago that Vermont had restrictions on building area, which has confounded superstores like Costco. Is that still true?
