Hang on, is Star Trek not an allegory for America being the country that will lead other nations to spiritual nirvana? I must have got the wrong end of the stick.

Keep in mind they put a Russian on the bridge. While they were also going for the youth demographic, it's also a signal that hey, this is the whole planet together, not just Americans.

Didnt read this post till i saw the movie, just in case,
This was EPIC...so fucking good ...I couldnt be happier.
So many nods to the original series that made me smile throughout. The fact that my 13 year old son who has never seen an episode, enjoyed it with fresh eyes made it all the more enjoyable for me.

The scene(no spoliers. I promise) when Kirk, sulu and some guy glowing red were going on a mission made me laugh out loud.
Heres to many more...should have been called Star Trek The new begining.

Fascinating. All evidence supports the hypothesis that this comic has gained...self-awareness.

I love how utterly contemptuous Chekhov is of the red shirt.

As if Chekhov has a right to be contemptuous of ANYONE.

Luckily, he's now a well rounded individual.

Side note: Anyone else catching Shatner's youtube videos? He has his own account - The Shatner Project - and he pontificates on all sorts of stuff. He's still definitely a pompous windbag, but he's entertaining as hell. He's a lot more enjoyable now that he seems to have embraced his Star Trek past in these autumn years.

He's in the same region as Lydon for me—insufferable, but still entertaining in that role. I've mentioned this before, but the audio versions of his Star Trek Memories books are absurdly entertaining because of his reading.

I really liked it man! Could have done with less action and more character stuff, but overall a film that hit all the right buttons. Roll on number two.

The Star Trek Thread: for when the den just isn't quite nerdy enough.

So, I watched the Best of TOS dvd with the newly remastered episodes. If you had to boil TOS down to four, these were great ones (City, Tribbles, Balance, Amok). The new effects were actually pretty decent. There isn't a whole lot different, but the Enterprise looks a little less putridly grainy (a problem even on the older remasters) and they don't just go to the same 2-3 stock planets anymore. I noticed on Amok they added in a short landscape shot that was kinda nice. So, yeah, I don't know if the changes are worth an upgrade for folks that already have the older dvds (I might pick 'em up if I can find 'em used for cheap) but I didn't notice anything offensive about the new effects. They're not, like, adding in all sorts of extra shit into every scene like the Star Wars remasters.

I think the Blu-Ray dvds have both the original effects and the new ones so you can choose, that would be ideal. I might upgrade when I (eventually) switch over to Blu-Ray.
