Peggy acts out ever chump's fantasy here. It's not the money per se, but she's exposed to Roger the limits of his power as a boss.

Every re-watch shows me something new, and since I took a few years off because of my cats (who wants to watch heavy shit when you're dealing with heavy shit?), I saw something I didn't notice before. I often wondered why Don was so nasty to Megan right from the get-go when he wasn't really that way with Betty. Betty, in the beginning, always toed the line -- the obedient little housewife and mother -- until she didn't and when she didn't Don mistreated her. Megan was headstrong and sure of herself so Don had to fight with her to keep her under his control right from the start.

Re: Mad Men
It’s that tension between being an ideal mid-century American man—provider and benevolent boss of the house as long as everyone acquiesces—and the fraud and traumatized child he really was, so he really needed to prove himself worthy of that ideal. Yet another tension emerges in the 60s as challenges to gender role ideals come to the fore, led by the young. Which is a unifying theme of the entire series, of how those who succeeded in 1950s triumphalist America deal with the cultural revolt against their worldview. Don alternately fights that wave and successfully surfs it, perhaps because he’s a fraud or a chameleon and doesn’t really have a true foundational faith.Mimi wrote: ↑08 Feb 2025, 10:30amEvery re-watch shows me something new, and since I took a few years off because of my cats (who wants to watch heavy shit when you're dealing with heavy shit?), I saw something I didn't notice before. Ginsberg's delivery of "masturbate gloomily" is freakin' hilarious.

Nice. Most people (probably just me) would take seeing a dead body in the parking lot on the first day of shooting as a bad sign.
