Papa's Got a Brand New Blog

Post by eumaas »

I'll be reviewing various albums that contribute to a sort of aesthetic I've perceived over the years and that influenced my playing back when I was a musician: the whole jazz punk/punk jazz bag. So there'll be a lot of early American punk, British post-punk, some hardcore, etc. as well as various avant jazz records. Expect the Pere Ubu review today or tomorrow.

Note: my condescending tone is tongue-in-cheek. Talking down to the reader is an old trick in the music critic's toolkit--it gives you the chutzpah to make sweeping statements about aesthetics when, to a large measure, much of it is subjective taste (though not all of it, I maintain).
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Cool party.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Posted my Pere Ubu review. Used it as an opportunity to outline how I see the development of the avant aesthetic in punk. Also, it's a play on Marx. Also, it's about cups and jokes.

Thanks. I don't spend much time evaluating it, but as I've marked it "essential" I assume people know that means I recommend it.

Consider yourself 'followed' by yours truly.

Speaking of blogs, I really need to update mine. I'm thinking about writing about Alex James and his cheese later on...but I'm not sure.

I especially liked the part about the clown.

Posted some brief thoughts on Philip Glass as an excuse to post a mashup of the Beastie Boys and Philip Glass.

This is all anybody needs to know about Philip Glass:

Even if you can't really read notation, you should be able to get the drift.
