Terrible guy, mean-spirited and personally very objectionable. In common with most of his age and class.

An entirely subjective thing to measure, I imagine, but I'm curious whether creative people—let's confine it to artists (writers, musicians, painters, that kind of expression)—are bigger assholes than Johnny and Mary Lunchbucket. They like to think of and/or promote themselves as cosmopolitan and open-minded and all that, and yet, past and present, revelations of racism, sexism, predatory behaviour, etc. Is being an artist just another job or is there anything distinct in terms of identity and attitude toward the world?

If there is anything to the idea that artists are bigger arseholes, it's likely got a source in the idea that to be a great artist you need to choose to put your creative work at the top of your agenda. Good artists can favour families, friends, and humanity's rules as a whole. Most of my favourite creators are still good people. But there's the recurring, perhaps untrue, image of the artist who uses everything in the service of his or her art, dulling their compassion and boosting their self absorption.

I will say that if you really want to get anything done, you do have to sacrifice social stuff and say "no" to invitations a lot—it's not really the same thing, but it comes from a similar place.

Yeah. I can see the sacrifices necessary to even be an artist of even slight abilities and I'm only just about willing to make those.

It does sometimes lead to people thinking you're aloof or too cool or something, kind of a drag.
