Yeah, if it looks easy, it’s because the person worked hard at it. I remember some comic book artist spoke about someone questioning how they could charge, like, $50 for a sketch they did in five minutes. They replied that the five minutes also required 30 years of training and practicing their craft.revbob wrote: ↑18 Apr 2024, 9:46pmId equate it to like batting practice. Yes, creativity is important, but if the standard is so high as to dissuade you—you're not being original enough—that's a trap that leads you to passivity. Fuck, I say that even as that's exactly my problem and why I don't write much (apart from here, of course). So formula isn't proof of inadequacy or being a hack. When my son was little he would come home from school with these books. Like monster and hero fantasy stories. In each book the hero had a new sidekick as he went on a quest to kill the monster that was plaguing a village. Very much a formula, different monster, sidekick and village but more or less the same story. There was probably 30 of these books at the time.
But I guess what you were getting at and which applies pretty much across the board is that you use these exercises to find out what works and wha doesn't. Its practice or rough drafts. Hopefully gets you in a good position for when you get your big chance or whatever. You eliminate some variables and tweak things you want to improve.

Yeah this is why I rarely help people with IT stuff. Because most people see you do some clicking and typing commands and they think, "that's nothing special, I could do that". I'll help some family and friends but for the most part it isnt worth my time.. If I dig a deep hole its easily quantifiable for most people but things beyond the physical are not as easily quantifiable for a lot of people. Plus if I fix something then thevnext time that person fucks things up they think I own the problem. Not worth it.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑18 Apr 2024, 9:55pmYeah, if it looks easy, it’s because the person worked hard at it. Try telling the person "You're not paying me for 5 minutes - you're paying me for the time you save by trying to draw this yourself. How long would t take you to draw this? How much is your time worth?".

He's flattered by the young woman, but he's still very much in love with Mrs. Squatch.
