Yeah I used to be really into virtuosity, but I find that as I get older, I'm still impressed, but a lot less interested. I kinda thought that would go the other way around. I suspect it's probably something to do with my love of post-punk increasing steadily since high school.matedog wrote: ↑23 Jan 2023, 4:24pmThe bass player in my cover band that was in for years' husband played like a 13 string bass:
He could do some pretty cool stuff with it, but it was definitely for a very specific genre.

He'd play during our set breaks which was always a nice change for audiences. He got semi viral doing a cover of the Super Mario Bros theme awhile back and would throw that in to always get a big reaction.Kory wrote: ↑23 Jan 2023, 4:27pmYeah I used to be really into virtuosity, but I find that as I get older, I'm still impressed, but a lot less interested. I was surprised that he didn't know how to read sheet music, so he couldn't really do anything beyond his instrumental originals. I think he played with bands too, but he couldn't do session work, so he was pretty limited.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

More of a pet peeve for me.Kory wrote: ↑23 Jan 2023, 4:19pmI'm finding that in the course of writing this more trip-hoppy music, the need for some lower notes could be valuable. Way too close. Why they needed two nights is beyond me. Do they have some kind of Phish/generic jam band crossover appeal?
Re: FAO Kory
They do, which always baffled me because they almost never do extended improv sections or anything (not that they don't have the skill but I think they like to keep the set tight). Like jam band cachet without actually jamming.
