Re: What Are you Eating Right Now?
Uncle revbob, I just noticed a Haitian takeout has opened in our neighbourhood—it's a site that has just cycled thru restaurants of various styles, but none have stuck—and was wondering if you or Mrs. revbob have any special recommendations (generally; obviously you haven't had anything from this place).

That fried pork dish (Pork Fritay Griot) looks pretty good to me, but I don't think we have any Haitian restaurants anywhere nearby.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑24 May 2025, 1:33pmUncle revbob, I just noticed a Haitian takeout has opened in our neighbourhood—it's a site that has just cycled thru restaurants of various styles, but none have stuck—and was wondering if you or Mrs. revbob have any special recommendations (generally; obviously you haven't had anything from this place).

So are you only considering non-meat, non-fish dishes?Dr.

It looks fairly traditional although I dont think Ive ever seen a beef dish, that sort of thing just isnt plentiful in Haiti but it makes a little more sense to incorporate it into your dishes in the Canada/US. Also interesting that the one dish that shows chicken in the pic doesn't mention chicken in the description.
Okay all that said goat (kabrit) can be quite good as can the griot but cooking meat that way doesnt hold up as well over time. When its fresh and hot its quite good. Ive never had bad rice from a Haitian restaurant nor person, and plantains also great, especially topped with some pikliz.

Re: What Are you Eating Right Now?
I'm aware that I'll probably have to eat meat if we try that place (tho there is a black beans and rice dish). So goat is probably the meat option to go to then? We'll keep that in mind. Thanks!revbob wrote: ↑24 May 2025, 4:33pmSo are you only considering non-meat, non-fish dishes?Dr.

Id say any of those meat choices should be good although goat can be an acquired taste and the rice and beans should be excellent although any sauce they might have is likely to have some meat drippings in it if you're trying to be strict with things.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑24 May 2025, 4:46pmI'm aware that I'll probably have to eat meat if we try that place (tho there is a black beans and rice dish). We were at a gathering last night and there was some really nice pulled pork from the local Cuban place (buffet style help yourself.) This one woman was really enjoying the pork until her friend said you know that's pork. She sheepishly said, I thought it was chicken before taking one last bite.

No, I'm not that militant about not eating meat. I'm not one of those people at a cookout who require a separate and pure grill. Don't eat meat if that's your preference, but don't be a dick to others about it.revbob wrote: ↑24 May 2025, 4:57pmId say any of those meat choices should be good although goat can be an acquired taste and the rice and beans should be excellent although any sauce they might have is likely to have some meat drippings in it if you're trying to be strict with things.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑24 May 2025, 4:46pmI'm aware that I'll probably have to eat meat if we try that place (tho there is a black beans and rice dish).
