So far, the blizzard-related death toll in the Buffalo area from the Christmas Eve blizzard is up to at least 31 and counting. Mostly from exposure, lack of heat, lack of emergency services, and cardiac-related snow-shoveling events (I can identify with the last one, because I actually laid down in the driveway to rest in the middle of this last snow-clearing session). Buffalo is still digging itself out, so the death toll will undoubtedly rise as the streets are cleared. The National Guard is helping with rescue efforts and with snow clearing (though not with my driveway, unfortunately). This was a historically bad storm – like, probably Buffalo’s worst storm on record. Missing out on family Christmas festivities is a minor inconvenience in comparison. I went to the grocery store today and the shelves were nearly empty with super long lines. I shop at Tops, different location but the same chain where the mass shooting took place in Buffalo earlier this year. Two other Tops locations nearby, which I’ve been to, were robbed/looted during the early stages of this storm, so they remain closed. Total shitshow here, but I’m super lucky my family is safe. Otherwise, we have gorgeous summers. Traffic is never a pain in the ass. We have lakes, rivers…best kept secret in the USA. But whatever you do, don’t move to Buffalo, because every 20 years or so, it kinda sucks a little. Go Bills!![]()

That’s why we’re known as the City of Good Neighbors. Cold neighbors. But good neighbors.Sparky wrote: ↑27 Dec 2022, 11:35pmGlad you and your family are safe from the storm, atta boy for clearing your neighbors driveway too!Kimmelweck wrote: ↑27 Dec 2022, 10:35pmI’m just in at 9pm from a final 2 hours with the snowblower, but I’m finally fully dug out. Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yeah I saw that story earlier. So sad, and just a few minutes from getting home too. It really was just absolutely shitty white-out conditions with zero visibility. Such a shame no one could get to her in time, but this area was just paralyzed.Mimi wrote: ↑28 Dec 2022, 11:19amThis is utterly heartbreaking.

Getting some decent thundersnow right now. Snowing rather mildly - will probably only get 1-3 inches today. But I just heard a huge thunder crack that went on for almost 10 seconds and shook the neighborhood. I don’t mind it.

We've got light snow right now, but supposed to be around 15 cm by tomorrow morning. Fine, as long as it's powdery and not slush. And it's cold enough that that should be the case. Meanwhile the pile on the curb in front of our house is about 5.5 feet. City can haul that shit away any time now …Kimmelweck wrote: ↑25 Jan 2023, 3:24pmGetting some decent thundersnow right now. 5.5 feet? When is that from? Despite the crazy amount of snow I got around Christmas, it’s all melted on its own, even the curbside piles, and my lawn was green up until a day or two ago. We had a nice warm spell for January though, which is about to come to an end.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Jan 2023, 3:44pmWe've got light snow right now, but supposed to be around 15 cm by tomorrow morning. Accumulated since December. Our pile is the highest on the block both because of my obsessive cleaning and the professional driveway clearers have been dumping their snow there (three nearby neighbours use the service). It's high enough now that there's a certain futility in shovelling now.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑25 Jan 2023, 3:53pm5.5 feet? When is that from? I can identify with the futility once the pile reaches a certain height. My neighbor has a fence that runs along my 100+ foot driveway, and I only have about a 4-foot wide strip on my side to dump everything. When I had 3+ feet in my driveway last month, I had to resort to blowing it over the fence when I thought nobody was looking.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Jan 2023, 4:17pmAccumulated since December. Agreed. I already love ordinary thunderstorms, and thundersnow is similar but without the drenching rain.Mimi wrote: ↑25 Jan 2023, 4:33pmThundersnow is amazing. Nothing but open lawn on the other side of the fence, so I wasn’t creating more work for anybody, but I still avoid it until there’s no other option.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑25 Jan 2023, 5:01pmYouse and me would be havin' words, we would!Kimmelweck wrote: ↑25 Jan 2023, 4:39pmI can identify with the futility once the pile reaches a certain height.
