Glad you guys are all OK, hope you get your dog back soon.
I don’t actually have a St. Bernard of course, I just drive to the liquor store, but I did just get my jeep back from the shop a few days ago. It was New York State annual vehicle inspection time for me, yay!. Had about $1500 in repairs/new tires/new brakes/etc. done to it. Hoping to get another couple years out of it, as used car prices are pretty crazy right now. Figured it was worth the investment rather than getting a new/used vehicle right now.

Do you non-New Yorkers have to get annual vehicle inspections? It’s a pain, but keeps the cars on the road a bit safer. When I went to school in Ohio for a couple years in the late 90s, I mentioned to a friend that I had to go back to NY for a day or two as my inspection was due - he laughed at me, “yeah right”, and thought I was kidding as he’d never heard of such a thing. To this day, I imagine that half the cars on the road in Ohio are death traps with shitty brakes, etc. They were also late to adopt seat belt laws and ban driving while using a cell phone – muh freedoms! Of course, Ohio also had drive-thru liquor stores, which was an entirely new concept to me at the time.
In California we don't have the annual vehicle inspection, but we have smog checks every other year that are a pain in the butt. I have one car that's very clean emissions wise, but the engine is modified and even though I have CARB (California Air Resource Board) approved parts, some shops have declined to smog it.
Everyone who watched The Price is Right in the 70s and 80s knows the phrase "California emissions"!

I think ours is like a 10 or 12-point inspection, which includes emissions, but also brakes, steering, tires, mirrors, lights, and a bunch of other things. It only costs $21, but usually there are a few minor repairs to get it to pass. Last year was a rare year where I only paid the $21 and everything passed inspection, which is a damn good feeling.

In TX, I just learned this week, instead of a Smog Check we have to get a certified inspection, which 90% of any auto-related business will perform, and they just make sure you aren't driving around in a death trap basically. It was 18 bucks.

And you & I both know that in CA that would take quite a few cars off of the road, I mean I see some sketchy looking cars without working brake lights, tail lights, headlights etc. every day.

this is fun AF, actually. I'll quickly change my tune if I lose water and/or power, which was widespread this time last year, as the local news won't let anyone forget.

You're like any new immigrant to Canada from a hot weather climate. Snow is fun and amazing until it becomes a fucking massive pain in the ass.

it's raining though, and then it turns to snow on the ground. And I'm yet to experience "sky snow". And the closest I've come to it is opening the back door and sticking my head out.

I've been saying for years that I want to get a smallish (2000 - 3000 watt) inverter generator just to keep the refrigerator / freezer running, but it's a pretty good chunk of change and we've always got other things that take priority. I have a natural gas line for our BBQ, so I'm hoping to find one already set up for natural gas instead of me having to void the warranty be converting it.

That's on our list for the spring—get a natural gas backup generator installed.

Nice, so you're probably looking at the larger ones that back feeds your electrical panel to power the whole house?

Thought about one of those for us, but it's a lot more money than the little inverters I've checked out. For the most part, we don't have inclement weather that would impact us for days on end, just random maintenance or repair outages couple of times a year that if they went on for more that 8 hours or so, could cause food to spoil.

It got up to 45F yesterday – felt like t-shirt weather compared to the single digits of the previous few days.

Now it’s 26 and snowing – we got about 3-4 inches last night and it’s still coming down. Probably 5 more inches coming between now and Friday.

This is the time of year I really start counting down to daylight savings time. That extra hour of light at the end of the day really improves the mood. Only 5 ½ weeks to go!

Yeah, 26 degrees F is pretty cold, it was only 43 F here this AM when I went for a run and my fingers were numb about half way through it.

Yeah, as I understand how they're set-up. My thinking is that climate change is accelerating wild weather, which will play havoc with the power supply, so this is insurance.
