Winds are at 45mph here, gusting up to 70mph. Just helped the kid at the gas station collect all the garbage can lids that were blowing down the street. Tree branches down everywhere. I’m charging my phone and preparing for a power outage that hopefully never comes. Thank god this global warming thing is a hoax or things could get bad. On the bright side, it was about 62 degrees here today after a couple weeks in the 30s-40s.

Are outages common in Buffalo? I can understand why, being right by the lake. That kind of shit is why next spring we're going to invest in a natural gas backup generator. I also want to look into the feasibility of solar panels. Partly to avoid outages but also to run my a/c in the summer semi-guiltfree.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 6:42pmWinds are at 45mph here, gusting up to 70mph. From what I understand, if you opt for solar, you really need to splurge for the Tesla battery to go with it in order to get the full benefit.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 8:28pmAre outages common in Buffalo? Where we live we get enough sun, but our electric consumption is pretty low, so the investment wouldn't pencil out.

Yeah, that's kind of my understanding. It's the storage capacity that makes the difference. Whether there are govt subsidies available will also impact our decision. I'll make inquiries next spring.Sparky wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 8:48pmFrom what I understand, if you opt for solar, you really need to splurge for the Tesla battery to go with it in order to get the full benefit.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 8:28pmAre outages common in Buffalo? Thanks. Just bad winds so far, which should die down a bit by 11pm. At least we’ve been missed by the tornadoes that have hit parts of the country recently. I was just reading an account of a tornado in 1898 that bounced over the river from Canada and took out a dozen houses on my street. That’s all I need.Sparky wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 8:23pmStay safe, hope the storm misses you completely.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 6:42pmWinds are at 45mph here, gusting up to 70mph. Maybe every year or two we lose power for a few hours, mostly ice or high winds taking out some isolated power lines, but it's usually repaired quickly. That's hit or miss, and the next block over might be fine. I’m about 5 minutes north of the Buffalo city limits.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 8:28pmAre outages common in Buffalo? The worst was in October 2006 - my power was out for 6 days. The “October Storm” or “October Surprise”. Just an early season confluence of shitty events – snow, rain, wind. Trees were still in leaf but the freezing rain covered everything with an inch of ice, which brought down huge branches and power lines everywhere. Then about 12-18 inches of heavy snow (plus, thundersnow!). It looked like a hurricane had passed through. For a few days, the streets were covered with branches and power lines and you really had to pick your route if you wanted to drive anywhere. That was pretty crazy. My gas-powered generator dates back to that storm, and all the trees in my neighborhood still show the damage. Over 57,000 trees in the Buffalo area were killed. The two large maple trees in front of my house, which had been there for 70 years, are gone because of that storm. The city replaced them with a freaking crabapple.

Yikes. Back in the late 80s, early 90s, there was a massive ice storm in eastern Canada that resulted in the military employed to aid people. Back in Western Canada, people snickered at the soft easterners and the like, but on the prairies we plain don't get those kinds of storms (insufficient humidity). Ice storms are fucking scary things. We experienced it, albeit modestly, when we lived in NC in the mid-90s. Brief outages but, like you mentioned, a few blocks from us the power was out for days. We ain't retiring here and hopefully we're gone before the next major ice storm hits.Kimmelweck wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 9:51pmThe worst was in October 2006 - my power was out for 6 days. Same here, 57 degrees. It was in the 60s earlier. I'll take it.

55 here right now, 39 this AM. Pretty odd when it's colder here on the west coast than it is back east.
