Licorice Pizza (2021) In 1973 Southern California, a 15 year old child actor (Cooper Hoffman) falls for an older photographers assistant (Alaina Haim) on school picture day. Hesitant at first, she slowly falls for him as they embark on a couple of business ventures together. On the way they encounter a few celebrities with name changes (Lucille Ball/Lucy Doolittle), (William Holden/Jack Holdman) I've always loved films that take place in LA, and i really loved this one.

Joel Cohen's Macbeth was pretty rad, but I wish he had shot on film instead of digital. Black and white always looks fake on digital.

The Lost Daughter. Everyone is recommending this movie and I couldn't get into it. Flimsy storyline with a lot of camera closeups held for longer than needed.

In light of this new evidence, Mr. Pesci, the Academy has voted unanimously to rescind your Oscar.

My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To (2021) A pair of siblings procure blood from homeless people to feed their feeble younger brother. Dark and depressing, but worth a watch, even though it’s definitely not the feel good hot of the summer! Title taken from the lyric of a cool 1967 soul song “I am Controlled by your Love” that I had never heard prior.

Kandisha (2020) Three teenage graffiti artists summon an Islamic demon to take revenge on an ex boyfriend who sexually assaulted one of them. It works, but now it’s after all the males in their lives and there’s no stopping it. Kandisha – Kandi – Kandyman…the influence wasn’t hard to find. Mediocre.

Direct to Video: Straight to Video Horror of the 90s (2019) Well, mostly, Chopping Mall is the 80s, but lots of movies featured, with a heavy lean towards Full Moon and Trauma, and commentary by Jim Wynorski, Brinke Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Fred Olen Ray, and many, many more. All the clips were via trailers, so often a person told a story of a scene of special effect and there was no visual accompaniment. But it was an easy watch, and there’s a couple things I’d like to seek out…if only I’d remembered to write them down! Something that stuck out to me, somehow Campfire Tales (1997) has the Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” on it’s trailer!

The Woods (2006) Something sinister in the woods is calling to the new girl in school in Lucky McKee’s homage to Suspiria and the House That Screamed. Patricia Clackson is the headmistress, and Bruce Campbell is the dad. For some reason this one didn’t click with me 15 years ago, but this time, alone on my couch at 1am I was on the edge of me seat! If you’re like me, give it another shot!

Pandemonium (1982) Zany, PG rated slasher parody starring Tom Smothers as a Canadian Mountie and Carol Kane as a student at a cheerleader camp. Also with Pee Wee Herman, Judge Reinhold, Tab Hunter, David “Squiggy” Lander and a cast of dozens. Directed by Alfred Sole of Alice, Sweet Alice fame. I gotta say, I laughed quite a bit.

Werewolf Woman (1976) A mentally unstable and sexually repressed woman gets the idea that werewolfism is in her blood, so when the moon is full she disrobes and bites the neck outof anyone she finds having sex in barns and what not. A surprising large amount, in fact. Lots of full frontal nudity and plenty of blood in this low budget Italian sleazefest.

The Dentist (1996) Corbin Bernsen is a Beverly Hills dentist who loses his marbles when he suspects his young wife is screwing the pool boy, and violently takes it out on his unsuspecting patients and staff. All the gooey gore you’d expect from a Brian Yuzna movie, complete with drills, bloody gums and shredded teeth, and some nudity too. With Ken Foree, Mark Ruffalo, and the girl from Herman’s Head.

The Dentist 2: Brace Yourself (1998) Corbin Bernsen returns as Dr. Feinstone, the opera-loving psycho dentist who escape from the asylum and opens up a new practice in small town Missouri. He tries to be good, but jealousy in a new relationship sends him over the edge once again, resulting on drills and bloody gums, and all the Brian Yuzna goodness. Some nudity, and Clint Howard (separately, thank goodness).

You haven't seen it? It was one of the very best movies that year.
