Just returned from seeing Joker. It's something. Still processing. I do think how much it owes to Taxi Driver in style and execution will keep it from gaining long term acclaim.

The Joker is great. I'm still analyzing it too.

One Cut of the Dead (2017) There’s a good buzz going around on this Japanese zombedy about a zombie break out on the set of a zombie film, and deservedly so. The first half hour was your normal hand-held camera zombie attack, but by the final act I was nothing but smiles. No details, just see for yourself!

It: Chapter 2 (2019) What I liked: The Peter Bogdanovich cameo. The homage to The Thing. What I didn’t like: The runtime. What was mediocre: Just about everything else.

Dark Waters (1993) English language, Russian filmed, euro-style satanic oddity. A young woman travels to a remote island where a group of nuns have been guarding an evil amulet for centuries. It seems her recently deceased father had been funding them for years, and she’d like to know why. A bit slow paced, but some outrageous make up FX at the end!

A Candle for the Devil aka It Happened at Nightmare Inn (1973) Two sisters run a hotel in Spain and find themselves compelled to murder young female guests whom they consider to have low morals. Judy Geeson (10 Rillington Place, Berserk) shows up to meet her sister and is greeted with a less-than-satisfying explanation as to why she suddenly “checked out.” Not particularly gory, a small but decent amount of nudity, and a handful of young, pretty, Spanish actresses, many of whom have other credits that include various Blind Dead movies. Thumbs up to this sleazy little delight.

The Curse of La Llorona (2019) I’d heard this was god-awful and I’m trying to cut down on my garbage viewing, but I like the Mexican folklore and I like Linda Cardellini. She plays a social worker (Mexican?) who removes two young boys from their home, and they quickly turn up dead, drowned in a river by the title ghost. The grieving mom thinks she can get her kids back by exchanging them for Cardellini’s kids. You can do that? Pretty bad. Some unintentional humor with some possessed eggs. Also, I need to call this movie out for a “False R”, there was no gore, nudity or language, what the fuck?

Dracula (1974) Made for TV movie from Dan Curtis (Dark Shadows, The Night Stalker) starring Jack Palance as the Count. Pretty faithful to Bram Stoker and they handled the Lucy bit pretty well, the most important part of the story in my opinion. They left out Dr. Seward and Renfield. I liked it.

The Furies (2019) A kidnapped woman wakes up in the woods stalked by multiple masked slashers. There are other women too, and they soon find the killers are pitted against each other as well. What kind of game is this? Stick around and find out. Fun and gory stuff out of Australia.

The Whip and the Body (1963) Christopher Lee whips his brother’s wife unconscious during sex, then finds himself with a knife in back. There are so many suspects, that no one even bothers to investigate! The wife has nightmares in which she is brutally whipped by Chris’ ghost! Is it real or has she gone mad? The are muddy footprints leading from his grave! Daliah Lavi and Evelyn Stewart are the babes, Tony Kendall is the leading man. Mario Bava directed this under the pseudonym of “John M. Old” between two of his classics, Black Sabbath and Blood & Black Lace.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. Perhaps an unnecessary addition to the series but very enjoyable nonetheless. Aaron Paul plays Pinkman perfectly, as do the rest of the crowd in their roles. Might be time to watch the series from the start again, can't wait.

I still need to see it. I'm sure runtime is breeze compared to reading the novel.

I've started this three times on Shudder. I like what I've seen so far but I always get distracted for some reason. Very Lovecraftian.
