Godzilla Vs Kong. Many scenes where the big ape looks sad. I'll never be truly satisfied by a film with King Kong in it, cos they always end up hurting the monkey at some point and I want 1hr 59 of him napping, wandering through a giant wilderness and stamping carelessly on people who have been quickly established to be irredeemable. 300 million dollar budget.

But, no, if you like the idea of the film, those setpieces deliver.

King Kong Escapes will always be my favourite because I'm pretty sure it was the first one I saw as a kid. Kong versus a robot Kong—perfect premise for ages 5 to 85.

Sure, Dr. Jekyll vs the Werewolf (1972) pre-dates the disco era by a few years, but perhaps the lovely Shirley Corrigan had an advance copy of the 8-track

In honor of 70s actress and model Anitra Ford, I curated a 3 film festival of her genre movies. In my living room for an audience of one, me. All three were great!

Messiah of Evil (1973) A young woman traces her artist father to his last known whereabouts, a semi-deserted California seaside town, where the townfolk come out after dark to eat human flesh. The gorgeous Anitra Ford gets eaten in a supermarket. A hippie girl gets it in a movie theater that starts out empty but is loaded with pale zombies only minutes after she sits (probably the film's visual highlight). The pretty Marianna Hill is the lead, she’s in dozens of things, the biggest is probably Fredo’s wife in Godfather 2. Really cool and creepy movie, reminiscent of Carnival of Souls but with blood, and written and directed by the same guy who brought Howard the Duck to the big screen!

Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973) Eight men in a small town are found fucked to death in three days in a small town, three of them research scientists. Scientists are quite the libertines, we found out in this one. The beautiful Anitra Ford is Dr. Susan Harris, who wears sunglasses indoors, and is secretly the queen bee herself, who’s screwing men into their graves, and converting al the local ladies to do the same by smearing them in royal jelly. I wasn’t a fan of the male lead, a fed investigating the case, but his romantic interest and female lead was Victoria Vetri aka Angela Dorian, best known for being a Playmate of the Year, the laundry room girl in Rosemary’s Baby, and going to prison for shooting her husband! Wonderfully cheesy and loaded with great nudity from many women, including both leads, this is a BEE movie done right!

The Big Bird Cage (1972) Sid Haig and Pam Grier are revolutionaries who rob a Filipino casino and kidnap guest Anitra Ford while they’re at it. Anitra takes the rap and is sent to the jungle prison, where the evil warden forces the women in to slave labor on his sugar mill made of bamboo, even though a girl is killed in an accident about once a week. When the law finally catches up with Pam, she quickly takes over leadership of the inmates, while Sid feigns homosexuality to get hired as one of the all-gay prison guard team so he can bust the girls out from the inside. Carol Speed taunts the Amazonian lesbian inmate then runs for her life every time she gets chased. Candice Roman is the oversexed blonde who will do anything for some action. Vic Diaz is a guard who tell Anitra not to bother covering up in the shower because “You’ve got nothing that interests me.” Non-stop nudity, action, and just enough comedy that there’s not one single dull minute in this gem from Jack (Spider Baby) Hill. Certainly the best Women in a Filipino Prison movie of all time (and I’ve seen a bunch!), and maybe even best overall.

Koko-di Koko-da (2019) Swedish arthouse Groundhog Day bullshit about a bickering couple on a camping trip being terrorized by a dead-dog-dragging, carnival-looking, forest-dwelling family. I can’t believe I made it to the end.

Candyman (1992) Chain-smoking grad student Virgina Madsen debunks the urban legend of Candyman, who then appears to her in order to cement his legacy in Bernard Rose’s adaption of the Clive Barker story, which is one of the decade’s best. Tony Todd becomes a genre legend as the title character.

Vampyres (1974) Two beautiful lesbian vampires stand on the side of the road to lure drivers back to their decrepit English mansion for nights of sex, wine, and bloodletting. A young married couple is camping nearby and the wife becomes a regular Mrs. Kravitz by sticking her nose in their deadly business. Loaded with blood and nudity, this movie is A-OK.

Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965) The first of the beloved Amicus anthologies stars Peter Cushing as the title character, reading tarot cards to five strangers on a train. A werewolf and a living vine are the first two stories, then a jazz musician encounters the wrath of Voodoo God Damballa for stealing the song from a ceremony. Damballa, of course, went on to have a long career holding a serial killer’s soul in a plastic doll, but that’s a whole different story. In the best segment, Christoper Lee plays a pretentious art critic who suffers a public humiliation and seeks revenge on Micheal Gough, for tricking him in to praising the painting of a chimp! In the final story, a young Donald Sutherland suspects his new bride is a vampire. Directed by Freddie Francis.

Delinquent Girl Boss: Worthless to Confess (1971) Five young women released from reform school try to make ends meet on the outside, but one of them has a sleazy yakuza boyfriend, and the gangsters continue to press her hard working father to pay his gambling debts. A small amount of nudity, and it didn’t get seriously violent until the end, but the savior of this film was the lead, Reiko Oshida, who plays the charming, tough talking baddass with a heart of gold, “Rika the Punk.” Apparently, this is the 4th in a series, it played as if it could have been the first.

Shocking Dark (1989) This Italian cheap-o was originally released as Terminator 2! Yes, there was a cyborg, but the James Cameron movie it seemed to be ripping off the most was Aliens. Other than the creatures were created from chemical pollution rather than extra-terrestrial, they were being perused up and down corridors by a commando team (including Demoni’s Geretta Geretta) and they even found their very own “Newt!” Laughably bad stuff from Bruno Mattei.

The Psychic (1977) Lucio Fulci’s slow paced murder mystery about a clairvoyant woman who finds a skeleton in the walls of the home of her new husband. The bones belong to an ex-girlfriend and the husband is quickly arrested, so she proceeds to put the pieces together from her visions in hopes to exonerate him. A lot of reviews feel this is one of Fulci’s best, I thought it was light on action, and had less than zero sex. Fulci does recreate the dummy-falling-off-a-mountain scene from Duckling, with nearly identical results! Jennifer O’Neil had her name above the credits, nothing special on her acting resume, but apparently she was a long-time Cover Girl with nine husbands and nearly that many suicide attempts before finding the Lord. I guess that was her in Scanners, too.

The Eight Immortals Restaurant: The Untold Story aka The Untold Story (1993) Comedic re-enactment about a 1985 case in Hong Kong where a restaurant employee murdered his boss and family, and disposed of the flesh by selling them in “pork buns” as he continued to operate the restaurant for several months after. The cops on the case were jokers, and the police chief had a different prostitute on his arm any day, and this really needed the comedy to offset the violence, because some of the scenes were really rough. A brutal rape scene in the middle changed the tone dramatically, and just when you thought it was safe buy more pork buns…the last 20 minutes had me begging for mercy. The actor who played the psycho won the Hong Kong equivalent of an Oscar. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Dr. Jekyll y el Hombre Lobo (1972) Spanish horror star Paul Naschy is werewolf Waldemar Daninsky once again. A couple honeymooning in Transylvania gets mugged and the husband killed. Daninsky rescues the woman (the very attractive Shirley Corrigan), who falls in love with him and takes him back to London where she hopes her pal Dr. Jekyll can cure him. The plan is to inject him with the “Mr. Hyde” potion, which in proper dose should stop him from turning into a werewolf. How could that possibly go wrong? Well if Dr. Jekyll has a jealous female assistant to sabotage it, it can. She lets the Mr. Hyde version of Waldemar loose on London and he has a penchant for raping, whipping and murdering pretty women. Make sure you see at least an 87 minute version of this, I saw a shorter one a few years back with none of the nudity intact.

Don’t Panic (1988) Michael gets a Ouija board for his 17th birthday, and he and his friends conjure up “Virgil”, who kills Mike’s friends one by one, while Micheal goes temporarily blind and only sees the killings. Quite the oddity, I believe this is a Mexican movie, but filmed in English? The love interest could have used some serious eyebrow plucking, she was an homage to Freda Kahlo. Any review you read is going to mention that the 17 year old lead spent a great deal of the movie in children’s dinosaur pajamas, so who am I to leave that part out. A fun-bad movie, but I was hoping for a little bit more. No surprise that Virgil didn’t spark a franchise.

Spasmo (1974) Christian takes Suzy Kendall (Bird with the Crystal Plumage) to a motel, and she promises to sleep with him if he shaves his beard. While doing so, an assailant with a gun breaks through the window, but Christian kills him in self defense. Rather then tell the police, they flee, but when they return the body is gone, and now he keeps telling people he killed someone and no one believes him. Then they break into a house and the strangers who live there befriend him, but it turns out that they remember they knew each other from a long time ago…by this point I stopped tying to follow the plot, I was lost and in no mood to rewind. There were some good things though, the sub-plot had a guy who loves to stab and hang mannequins from trees, there was a few deaths and a small amount of nudity. Not Umberto Lenzi’s best giallo, but it scores points on the weirdness scale, and has an Ennino Moriccone score.

I also made my BIG THEATER return (I got shots) to see a monkey rack up his frequent flyer miles while chasing a lizard all around, and even inside the g

Itsy Bitsy (2019) A pill-popping single mom (and not the cool kind) takes a job caring for Bruce Davison (Ben), a collector of old artifacts, and her family is soon in danger from the cat-sized spider that was inside an antique. Davison was supposed to invalid, but he seemed just fine and the pill popping mom just went to the pharmacy for him every day. You’d think pharmacies could fill more than a day’s worth of prescriptions at a time. Denise Crosby (Pet Sematary) plays a folksy old sheriff. Have you ever wondered how a SyFy movie would be if they removed the campiness? Just awful.

The Power (2021) In 1974 England, a young nurse get a job in hospital on the bad side of town, and for some reason (budgetary?) the night shift has to work without electricity. Well there’s a ghost, the main girl has a secret…ugh, I’m so tired of ghost of someone who was wronged. I knew what I was getting in to. The girl was pretty. The movie was dull.

Sukeban Gerira aka Girl Boss Guerilla (1972) Five hot juvenile delinquents on motorcycles roll into Tokyo and kick a bunch of guys in the nuts, pickpocket wallets, turn tricks, and beat up the girls in charge (pulling their tops off in the process) and declare themselves the new gang bosses. They aren’t too happy when they realize they have to bow down to male yakuza, so that turns into a power struggle, and the movie gets a bit more brutal. With Miki Sugimoto and Reiko Ike, this is a ton of fun, and I believe a middle entry in a franchise.

Promising Young Woman (2020) A non-exploitative rape/revenge movie with a good cast and script. I loved it.

Girl on the Third Floor (2019) A man renovates a rundown house in the suburbs while his pregnant wife waits at home. He has an affair with a mysterious girl that hangs around his house, and soon finds her hard to get rid of. She gets violent as he finds out the house has a sordid history. Not so bad but I felt the story called for a much higher sleaze factor, which is something many modern movies won’t touch these days. Pro wrestler CM Punk was the lead. Much of the movie was him reaching into a wall and pulling out goo.

The Vampire and the Ballerina (1960) A house full of beautiful young dancers run afoul of the male and female vampire who reside in the dilapidated castle in the nearby woods. I liked this one a lot, nice and simple. Black & White, Italian with subs.

Slaxx (2019) Satire on consumerism about a possessed pair of jeans that murders the after hours employees of a trendy Canadian clothing store. Good enough to watch once.

The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs – Season 3 Episode 1

Mother's Day (1980) One of the first movies from the Troma team, I'd seen this brutal flick over and over when i was a teenager. I think the difference between young me and now was that I used to root for the killers, and now I root for the victims! It's about some former college roommates that go camping on their yearly reunion, and come across raping/murdering hillbillies and their psychotic mother. Very satisfying when they fight back, and a fun ending. Pretty good considering the budget.

House by the Cemetery (1981) The opening scene has a hot blond with an open shirt get stabbed through the back of her skull through her mouth. The movie never manages to get as good as it was in the first 5 minutes, but still good nonetheless. A husband, wife and young son move to the former house of the mad Dr. Fruedstein and more gory shit happens. The son keeps being warned not to go in by an obvious ghost-child. Lots of stabbings and blood, just like you would expect from Lucio Fulci. I wouldn’t rate this in his top tier, but definitely second tier.
